Can I drive a newly purchased second hand car from a garage before it's taxed?

Can you drive a car home you've bought from a garage, and then apply for motor tax that evening, or do I need to wait until I receive the tax disc before I collect it from the garage?

I.e. is there a grace period?

Usually just ask them for a slip saying the car is just bought and leave it on the dashboard. You would be unlucky to be done if you get the tax done quick. Just keep the mail from when you tax the car.

There is no grace period but if your docs are in order you'd be very unlucky to get done.

You run the risk of having the car lifted if the tax is more than 2 months out. Any reasonable cop would let you on but that's the risk you take.

Carry the receipt from the garage with you when driving, in case you're stopped at a Garda checkpoint. Tel the cops that the tax is in the post, you shouldn't have any problem with a car you just bought. But do not park on a public road or you could get a ticket for non-display.

If you tax the car now, you'll have to pay for the month of June, I'd wait until July 1st to tax it.

You’re liable for the tax from the day you sign the logbook or the day the car is transferred into your name. If you don’t tax the car until July, there will be arrears owed from the date of change of ownership too before you’ll be able to tax the car.

Also, you can’t tax your car until Shannon has transferred the car officially into your name. You can check this on line. I had an issue with this and it took over a month before the car was officially in my name due to an admin error.

This long is highly unusual, but it can take up to two weeks from the day you notify Shannon of the change in ownership until it is officially in your name.

If you buy it from a garage that uses Motortrans online change of ownership system it can be in your name next day. Providing the Admin in the garage process it the day you collect it.

Just watch where you park it. Wardens can issue tickets for no tax. As previously said you'd be very unlucky for a garda to do you ..

Ah I'll keep it at home until the disc is ready.

It's just the drive cross-city from garage to my house I want to be ready for "just in case"

The garage owner said he'll do the transfer 1st July.

I'll check if he's registered to get it done quickly online though.

    Who's Shannon? :)

Then you can't drive it. You won't be insured till its in your name and not having tax is a tiny problem compared to not having valid insurance.

Shannon is where they process vehicle details.

I'll be getting the start date of the insurance to the 1st July as well

So, you are saying that if I buy a car from you tomorrow I cannot insure it until Shannon have processed a new VLC with the Car in my name....total nonsense.

I'd be more worried about not being insured - Murphy's Law

So you can't drive it at all until then quite simply.

Depends on his insurance as many can drive cars that are not theirs. If not his he can test drive and leave on driveway till it's his and insured.

Link is for someone without insurance. My point stands if you have insurance some insures allow you to drive other cars.

It's a highly risky decision to take.

I am certain that an insurance company would not see things in that same light. Definitely not worth the risk. Mr garage, had you actually sold the car to person a at this point....yes in reality, but we just hadn't transferred the ownership.

    No cover

The transfer of ownership on the VLC bears no relation to who the owner of the vehicle is, in this case.

If money has been paid to the dealer and accepted by the dealer, then the vehicle belongs to the customer.

Yep. That's what I was saying. Hence he wouldn't be covered third party like he said

    This.

Just let your insurer know when you are going to buy it and what the reg is. They'll start cover then.

You aren't covered under the 'drive other cars' clause (if you have it), as in the eyes of the insurer, you own the car once you pay for it, not when Shannon catches up.

I bought a van in 2017 which had not been taxed for 2 years, as it was owned by a garage and driven on trade plates, a few days after I bought it I was stopped by Gardai who were using APNR , I showed them a copy of the change of ownership document, and the email from the insurance company with the time and date of the insurance transfer, and they told me to drive on, so you should have no problem OP, just be sure to transfer your insurance before you leave the garage.
I also got a ticket from Apoca, within a few days of buying it, for no tax, which I appealed to the County Council, and the appeal was upheld .

I wouldn't worry about it, bring the paperwork from the garage in glove pocket, if you get stopped just show it to them

I bought a car 2 years ago, filled in all paperwork and waited. 2 months later I went back to garage as I couldn't pay the tax. Can't remember if I hadn't done something or if the garage hadn't, anyway it wasn't sent to tax so that's why I couldn't pay. It was imported car. Got it sorted and they just backdated to the date I bought car

Drive away and get it sorted when you get a chance, I wouldn't be worried about getting stopped and done.....as mentioned above, insurance needs to be sorted before you attempt to drive the car from garage

I got stopped before after buying car, was a week or two afterwards, pulled out paperwork and showed Garda, he had a quick look over it, said best of luck with new car and off I went.....

Can the tax application and transfer of ownership documents be sent to the office in Shannon together ?.This could be done in the garage before taking the car out, therefore having copies of applications to show if stopped by Garda.

I would hope the garage is giving you a recipt or document to show you purchased the car. Price and car reg etc. That is what I kept in car.

well yeah obviously I'll be getting a receipt.

OK thanks for tips all, I'll just notify the insurance of date of purchase etc and follow their advice.

They did say that any advice they give is on record so if I get the go ahead from them then it's on their shoulders if I follow their advice to the letter.

Based on previous experience. You ring, them them what time you want the insurance to start covering the new car and off you go.

Till be a sad fecking day when you can't go into a garage/private sale and drive out the gap an hour later. But tis heading that way. You can still do it now . However I think insurance wise it must have an NCT booked? Am I right?
Law of the land wise AFAIK it needs tax and NCT? The gaurds will give leeway for tax but will they for NCT?
I'd imagine going strictly by law, a car cannot legally be drivin without tax or NCT?
That is probably the case, cue lots of towing and transporting of cars from NCT centres.
