Kiwis in the city

    Is there a NZ Kiwi association or group in Galway or even just a pub or club where they frequent?

    My son and his Kiwi girlfriend are moving back to Ireland in the next few weeks and we thought it would be good for them if they were able to meet up with a few Kiwis to give a bit of advice and help her settle in a bit and maybe not feel like she is so far from home.

    Send them to Kai Cafe/Restaurant on Sea road in the West End of the city. Its a Kiwi restaurant. Owners should have all the low down on Kiwi groups etc in Galway.

    The NZIA is based in Dublin.

    Kai is nice, but pricy. Not really a hangout unless you've on very good money.

    Avoid the Skeff. Too many Aussies there.

    Meeting other immigrants living here can be helpful. Or maybe not - if they're on WHVs they'll be moving on again soon enough, not really good for making long-term friendships. If you're hoping they'll stay long term, then meeting other long-term immigrants is a better approach.

    Bring a long-form birth certificate, and copies of School C / UE / Bursary / NCEA /IB / third-level quals (delete whatever doesn't apply depending on the age). As well as professional registration certs etc.

    Is this serious? The OP was just looking for a group to socialise with and you suggest bringing professional qualifications to prove themselves, just to join an organisation which has a very unfortunate anagram.

    Been a while since i lived in Galway, but there used to be a Kiwi managing the Salthouse Pub, and a few kiwi's used to frequent it to keep up with news from home.

    Deadly serious.

    No kiwi coming here needs a social group from home: if they wanna talk to Kiwis, skype is a click away.

    They do need a job though. And having the right paperwork from the beginning will make this easier. No one would expect their school results to matter once they've got a tertiary qualification, but here, sometimes, they do. Go figure.

    To be honest I was just looking for suggestions like the salt house pub. We lived in NZ for 6 years and it was nice to meet up with a few Irish people every now and then, especially at the start. Advice and help we got from them was invaluable and they also understood what we were going through.

    Not to sound like I'm playing to a stereotype but head to Galwegians and Corinthians Rugby clubs both have a few NZers there

    Corinthians summer tag is on at the moment and would have a good social scene
