I was the same listening whilst doing homework at home in the early 90's, but it was crappy 909 or 693 on MW where you would miss words and part of the action :)

Oh you have to use a VPN to listen outside UK. Just create an account and switch on VPN and happy days. I use it to listen to live match if I'm away from the TV.

    4SrhbWl.jpg

Growing up didn't have Sky sports at home so 5Live was invaluable. From the box room in the attic you could get a signal on the AM channel which would fade in and out.

I remember listening to the Everton game in 2001 up there with Gary Mc's last minute free kick - the signal was fading in and out and it faded back in for me to year the commentators going mental!

This just sent me down a wikipedia rabbit hole....

Reading back on Wiki, I'd forgotten that that was the first time Liverpool actually qualified for the Champions League since Heysel so that was a massive achievement.

The Houllier years were the first taste of success I'd seen as a Liverpool fan. Listening to the Redmen podcast interview with Carra recently where he compared that team to the 2005 team, and talked about how physically strong the 2001 team were, with essentially 4 centre halves accross the backline.

One thing that strikes me looking back through the years is how quickly progress can be lost with a few bad transfers - getting the Diouf/Anelka thing wrong was a big blow for Houlier, Benitez never replaced Alonso and the Robbie Keane transfer backfired. Then under Rogers the Suarez money was not well invested and the Balotelli transfer was a disaster. It's nearly possible to predict how the Liverpool seasons play out by just looking at the transfers in/out section on Wiki.

Thankfully the transfers over the past few years have held their value.
I think as fans we can get locked into thinking about certain targets (not getting Konoplyanka or Alex Teixeira was seen as a disaster once upon a time. And Simao!). Then there's the ones that got away, I remember Liverpool were in for Eriksen when he went to Spurs and I was desperate for us to do that deal, and Dani Alves back in the day went on to be world class.

Sometimes I look at Chelsea's recruitment model and how well they use it. They rarely seem (Morata asside) to have any real stinkers of signings). They use the loan system well (maybe too well). The players they buy (I've thinking of the likes of Kepa, Rudiger, Pulisic), all appear to be of a high technical standard and will all hold their value.

The thing that scares me the most for next season is injuries. Mane/Salah/Firmino/VVD/Allison/Robbo have basically nearly always been available.

There's depth in the squad alright but I'm not mad on the idea of Origi/Brewster/Shaq spending a long time in the team if there were long term injuries. Defence and Midfield probably have decent enough cover (bar LB).
Hopefully the club can line up a decent forward or two that can genuinely compete for a place in the starting XI

I've seen some lad Pepe (not that one) been mentioned a few times in transfer rumours, scored 10+ goals last season in France, is he any use though?

Scored more than 10+ goals, he scored 22 goals in the league! ;)

Meant to be a direct pacy wideman, who scores goals. His season previous, he got 13 league goals.

Never seen him play a full game tho. Doubt many would watch Lille games that often, when they are not in CL.

Is there any chance we'd go back in for Fekir I wonder?

I presume a backup LB will be needed for sure.

Only Pot 1 matters for Champions if you are not in Pot 1 then Pot 2 to 4 is done on coefficient

Speaking of co-efficients, I think we're going to start the season in the top 10, jumping ahead of Sevilla and Porto and level with Arsenal

    1 Real Madrid CF
    2 Club Atlético de Madrid
    3 FC Barcelona
    4 FC Bayern München
    5 Juventus
    6 Manchester City FC
    7 Paris Saint-Germain
    8 Liverpool FC
    = Arsenal FC
    10 Manchester United FC

I also thought ACON's was to skip a tournament or something like that and go in line with the European Championships?

No, they agreed to go to a summer tournament to be in line with most of the other continental events, but they are still sticking with odd-numbered years.
It makes sense really -they already get quite low viewing figures and sponsorship revenue but it would kill it totally going directly up against the Euros.

Another 2 seasons to get that missed season out of the co-efficients for Liverpool

Yep, we're the only team in the top 15 with a missed season and Chelsea are the only other team in the top 25 with one (same season as us)

So if we keep qualifying we'll get a really good bump that year. United are moving up 8 places now with their blank 14/15 season out of the calculation

Anyone think we should have gone in for Daniel James? Reports of 18m to united. Looks like the makings of a player, serious pace.

Yeah I think he would have been a good signing.

His end product is not there atm but he has the ability to become a good player.

I think long term he is better than Wilson despite there goal & assists difference.
James an an x factor than gives him a better chance at a higher level than Wilson.

    Studge off to rangers apparently

    Studge off to rangers apparently

I'd be stunned if this was the case. On a free transfer, he'll command a hefty signing on fee and high wages (by Scottish standards) and Rangers don't have a massive budget.

Plus, and maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't Steven Gerrard publicly criticise his effort and energy more than once, including in his biography? It would strike me as an odd one - if there was a close relationship there, you'd say maybe but I remember those two not really getting along.

Hard to tell , has pace but hard to see what else he has , Jermaine Pennant for the pepsi generation imo

not sure of his relationship with Lamps but think he would be a far better fit at Derby , they could accommodate him , has family connections with Derby through his uncle and would tear up the championship if he can stay fit .

He's a Liverpool fan too but serious pace does not always make for a good footballer at the top level. He's obviously a bit of a project. Might work out. Might go down in flames.

No, the club just won a Champions League so buying a player from the Championship to develop ain't exactly ambitious & honestly not realistic.
We have Mane & Salah out wide who were joint top goal scorers in the league last season.
What chance of minutes does he have to get so he can improve?
Probably not enough to develop properly as at that age you need to play every week & avoid the reserves teams like the plague.

I'd have approved of Daniel James to Liverpool....two years ago. We're eating at the Captain's table now, not by the loo doors.

    I wouldn't see the point ,
Of course he could become a great player but we have Wilson who is only a few months older and record is better

    James 39 games 5 goals
Wilson 67 games 24 goals , In the last two season 60 games 24 goals

Wilson will more than likely be sold anyway so can't see James getting a look in at Liverpool

You hit the nail on the head this was the type of singing we where making under Woy and Brandan , we are far beyond that point now ,

Wouldnt make much sense if the rumours about signing Nicolas Pepe are true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭Nerdlingr

For 15m I thought James could have been a shrewd investment. Great pace off the bench to have. We dont have that option at the mo.
Fair enough he's not going to see much game time, but would be grand for the cup games.
Its the price more than anything that makes it look like a worthwhile punt.

By that logic Harry Wilson for free would make more sense - his numbers are far more impressive as a cup game squad filler.

We cant have both no? Both have different attributes - set piece v speed merchant. Wilson could easily step up instead of the likes of lallana.

France training camp with the game in Switzerland?

Yes we can, but there are only so many games that we'll rest the front 3. So when do we play Ox, Shaq, Origi, Wilson and Pepe? I'd presume the latter will be blended in over the season, maybe with an eye on either Salah or Mane leaving in a year...

It's only an hour and half over the border from the training camp.

Huge shame that they played Dublin the last two years, they won't come again and we won't get to see that beautiful trophy...
