I have been asked to do an unusual deed. Tow a caravan down to Wexford for a relative. I'm very sketchy about it, so I refused because I don't want people to think I'm a traveler / tinker or whatever you want to call those characters these days. I looked at this fcking thing, Jesus there is no way I am going to hitch that contraption up to my car and bring it anywhere! I wont do it, no way Pedro !

Would you tow a caravan from Dublin to Wexford for a relative as a personal favour? Am I being selfish ?

The only thing I'm thinking now is that you probably watch way too much Top Gear and place great stock in the utterances of Jeremy Clarkson.

What are you towing it with.. if a Transit or Hiace then I would assume you were a pikey, and behave accordingly towards you.

I drove up from Wexford yesterday. The road had a load of caravans and not once did I think that they were anything but people towing caravans.

The only thing that you need to worry about is that the car is rated to tow the caravan.

As long as you have a decent vehicle fit for the job and you're not pulling it with a Yaris

They prefer the term "Ethnic Irish"

Towing is not something everyone can do. Best leave it before you get someone killed.

maybe as you pass through Enniscorthy you might be mistaken for one . If you meet other lads towing caravans with vans and they salute you , that's how you know . Other than that you'll be grand . Unless of course you could be mistaken for a traveler even when you not towing one

I never towed a caravan in my life, a trailer yes. I have an Octavia VRS, it will pull it no problem. The stigma connected to towing one is the problem. Years ago in the 80s and early 90's lots of irish families towed up and down the country. These days people have a different perception of caravans wobbling behind a car or a van. It's my view on it anyways.

Are you licensed to tow a trailer ?
Most drivers just have a "Class B" licence, but you need a "Class BE" licence to tow a caravan.

So you could be done for driving without a licence, no insurance etc...

You seem overly concerned about the opinions of strangers you pass on the road. That's my view on it anyways

Depends on the weight of the car, the weight of the caravan, the gross combined vehicle weight prescribed by the car manufacturer etc. You can legally tow a caravan with a car/van/4x4 on a b licence once insured and within weight limits.

What stigma? I doubt anyone bats an eyelid at anyone towing a caravan. The irony of this is that Traveller's spend a lot of time living in caravans but not a huge amount of time towing them. Don't know what perception people have of towing caravans that is profoundly different to 20 years ago.

Literally thousands of tourists/people who have Caravans for summer tow them all the time. No one thinks anything of it.

The only person with an issue of someone towing a caravan is you. If you don't want to do it then don't.

Then people are stupid because that's the maximum speed a car can tow a trailer.

To clarify, I'm referring to the inevitable 50kph main road doddler with a 2 mile tailback.
