    I was in Beijing, Xian and Guangzhou. As I say, all manky slimy meat with greens sauced to high heaven for no discernible reason, to be ate with chopsticks which were very quickly too slimy to hold on to anything. It was a local tour with plenty of locals and certainly no indication of being exotic or expensive. I was also offered a polysterene cup of diced green something by an elderly woman on a train from Tibet to Xian, and gristle on bone which I have literally no idea how you were supposed to eat.

    The foot in Tibet was lovely, strangely enough. Good bit of meat and spuds.

    Russian food is decent imo, though some of the breads take a bit of getting used to. I voted for US food as well purely because of the amount of burgers on menus (a trend which is catching on here too unfortunately). I got the Amtrak train across America where the food menu was simply three different types of burgers. I like a burger, but jaysus lads, a bit of variety would be no harm.

    If you want a curry in Beijing hit up Ganges above Paddy O’Sheas in the embassy district. It’s Indian food but they do a good curry. The Chinese themselves rarely if ever make curries. Tour groups are the worst as they are penny pinching and taking you to the worst places. Next time you are in Beijing; go to Da Dong for Peking Duck it’s a little pricey but very palatable even for the non adventurous Irish palate, go to Hai Di Lao for a traditional Chinese hot pot, Chinese BBQ is also great in Beijing but I think you have to go a bit off the beaten track to get the best ones, if you are genuinely interested I’ll point you in the direction of a fantastic one in Sihui not far from the CBD. Beijing does amazing noodles, two that stand out are hidden noodles in Sanlitun and Lingerjiu in Xingfucun but there are outstanding noodles everywhere in Beijing. You can go to Din Tai Fung or Jin Ding Xuan for Dim Sum, Man Jie for dumplings, Mama de Weidao for cheap Chinese food, Chuan Ban for Sichuan food..... I mean I am just scratching the surface, Beijing is a world class culinary destination and it’s really affordable. It’s a pity that your tour group screwed you over because there is fanatastic food on every corner of Beijing.

    I’d be over China side a fair bit and you can get some of the best food in the world there. You can get terrible slop as well though. They’ve a very different attitude to food there, so getting a chicken dish with the neck and legs included is seen as a sign of quality, and not because the chef was lazy or the food cheap.

    Not a countries cousine as such but I hate the new poncy way of serving food here
    Mash potatoes with veg and meat all piled on top of it . A sprig of something green on top of that .
    Silly little portions in buckets and salads served in bowls where you can even get a proper knife and fork in there
    De constructed desserts which looks like slop and we are all supposed to ohh and ahh . Emperors new clothes comes to mind

    It wasn't just tour group food though. It was some aul dear on a train (can't get more traditional than that!) and a train station café (hardly haute cuisine, sure, but Madigan's in Connolly hardly serves up muck) and a café in Beijing as well. All of it manky stuff.

    I'm obviously happy for you to agree to disagree of course. The world would be boring otherwise. But life's too short to chance going back for that crap again!

    This isnt't the famine anymore, we don't need to be eating Irish "cooking" anymore such as boiled pigs trotters, tripe, and pig's blood and barley black pudding, boiled cabbage and boiled everything as if the only cooking equipment still available was a large cast iron black pot.

    It’s a developing nation and there are 20+ million people in the city, so of course there is plenty of crap but there is sooo much good food too, China is the great culinary nation on earth and Beijing (even moreso than Shanghai or Hong Kong) has the best of everything Chinese food has to offer, from tough Mongolian BBQ to delicate Cantonese Dim Sum, from Muslim cuisine out of Xinjiang, to spicy Sichuan dishes and everything in between. To anyone reading this and thinking of visiting China hit up the expat websites like thatsbeijing (not TripAdvisor! And not your chinese tour guides!) to introduce you to local food.

    Used to visit Spain quite a lot, and at times really struggled to find edible meals. I'm not a fussy eater, but a lot of the stuff there was absolutely disgusting. I remember trying to keep it simple by ordering a ham and cheese sandwich and they served up cold hard lumps of parmesan. Then there was this runny mince dish with the consistency of diarrhea. In general, its pretty cheap crap

    Used to visit Spain quite a lot, and at times really struggled to find edible meals. I'm not a fussy eater, but a lot of the stuff there was absolutely disgusting. I remember trying to keep it simple by ordering a ham and cheese sandwich and they served up cold hard lumps of parmesan. Then there was this runny mince dish with the consistency of diarrhea.     Spain is an amazing country for food in my experience if you know where to go. The best breads, cheeses and cured meats. I also love the tapas.
    Also the regions are all different from each other.
    I particularly like Galicia and the Basque Country.

    The pork, or schweinhaxe, is delicious. Have had it in Austria. The sauerkraut and dumplings, not so much. Would agree that German cuisine (well, I'm talking Austria cos that's what I've experienced) is very heavy on the vinegar.
