    Ali’s Kitchen
    Spitjack
    Crawford Gallery Cafe

I would second all these and add in The River Lee Hotel & Liberty Grill.

For brunch, all the above are good but I'd also add in the Parlour - it's a little cheaper than some of the others but there's no drop in quality IMO. Definitely my favourite spot in the city for breakfast.

Also, if it's a weekend, Soma Coffee Company on Tuckey Street do a really good brunch too. Usual mix of eggs with varied weekly specials. Well worth a look.

    I'm the same.
I liked it when it opened but then they changed the menu and put up the prices considerably. Doesn't seem worth the money now.

Probably better than most of the Indian restaurants in Cork, imo, though.

I think people fall into two categories regarding Indian Restaurants in Europe.

Those that enjoy Indian restaurant food and those that don't.
    I fall into the latter.
I love Indian flavours and good home cooked curries but I just don't enjoy Indian restaurant food as we know it here.

I've heard it's the best in the city and would love to try it.

Tried a couple of Indian restaurants in Cork (and a couple in Dublin) and none come close to Spice of India for consistently excellent food. Just my opinion.

I’ve tried most of the Indian restaurants in the city and Haveli without a doubt, for me, is the nicest.

I can see that there are quite a few folks here who like Indian food, best way is to make a few Indian friends and get invited for a meal at home (only families, wont get much home cooked food out of students) :-) its quite easy as we do like to cook and feed people. I don't live in Cork myself to oblige unfortunately

to add - its also not very difficult to do a few curries at home (if you like to cook), I can give a few pointers :-)

We did just that and were invited next door to a few family events. The food was top class. Unfortunately they moved away since.

    Any tips would be appreciated.

If you haven't eaten in The Freestyle Asian Restaurant on North Main St then you should be ok ;-)

Sorry I was confused, I thought they were just describing the type of restaurant it was, didn’t realize that’s it’s name. Is it that Buffett Chinese restaurant by the old Duness stores?

I think the last incarnation of Freestyle was closed down for a time as well by the FSAI.

I think so, always full with Chinese.

Was that place called Beijing Taste before?

Spice of India in bishopstown? That is good actually... when I lived near there we liked it a lot. Other side of the city these days, too much of a pain to go there. I am not mad about eastern tandoori. Too greasy for me.

Sorry I meant Bombay Palace (on Cook st). Although I went to Spice of India once as I had a voucher. Can't recall whether I liked it or not but based on location I probably wouldn't return.

The only time I have had good food in Haveli is when I have been there with my Indian buddies, they have a different set of food entirely. It bugs me BIG time that I have to look Indian to get the good food.

    99% sure it is!

It was. That place also got a closure order from the FSAI. I'd imagine it is why they changed the name.

That's right. And they could do the same now.
Is it a legal loophole, as technically it is trading as a new company? There should be a way around that.

Not sure but I'd say it's common enough. I remember a place called Tasty Bites near the train station in Limerick did the same thing. The place looked manky on the outside, never understood how it got any custom. The place changed its name after being closed by the FSAI.

Speaking of changing names, does anyone know anything about Indian Moon in Douglas? The premises seems to close and change its name every year or 2 but always re-opens and functions as an Indian take away. Surely if a take away wasn't viable at that location it wouldn't keep re-opening as a take away. Don't think it's related to anything to do with the FSAI.

Anyone remember a Chinese food buffet / food wholesaler called CX Oriental on Tramore Rd closed or moved away to somewhere else in city a few years ago? What ever happened to it?

It moved to part of a filling station in Turner's Cross but closed after about a year or so there.

I wonder why though. Not doing enough business or something?

I remember them, they had a massive store, we used to go there whenever we went to Cork - it had a restaurant attached as well. We did go once when it was part of that filling station on Kinsale road, much smaller, sad to find out now that they are closed
