"The English are no craic"

Anyone see that interview with Donnacha O'Callaghan. He says they're polite and nice but "no craic". Is this an example of Ireland exceptionalism? I wouldn't call what English do when they go to football tournaments "having the craic" but it's not like they're all stuffy posh types. Of course, when he means having the craic he might mean something else. I do actually think it's a uniquely Irish thing. It's not like other countries aren't fun(Spanish I'd say are more extroverted and outgoing than Irish) but the craic is different. It's actually innocent enough messing combined with a self-awareness. There's gob****es who think they're great craic when really they're just ***** but I do think we have a unique sense of humour and happy go lucky attitude. Again, it's not like all Irish people are funny but it's like we have a national light hearted mentality.

    What do you think?

I think they are great craic! :)

We have a slightly different sense of humour. And we have lots of irish in-jokes. I think irish people are best in the world at irish craic. But that's not the only type of craic worth having.

We have our own sense of humour and it would be a bit arrogant to presume we have the best craic.

But the English never had the craic..
    The English have "Banter"..
The craic is an Irish phenomenon..
Now that the Irish are "Having the Bantz" as well, well, God only knows what will happen..

I think Dublin has a different humour from the west of Ireland. Dubs, have that fast wit even when they don't know it. Bit more cynical, deadpan and dry than other parts of Ireland

Boring rugby player asks Tommy Tiernan to teach the English how to be a good craic?

nah, you're ok thanks. If Tiernan's humour is what "good craic" means, you can keep it thanks.

Irish people can be more moody and grumpy apparently!

Ah sure DOC's idea of "craic" is pulling funny faces in photo ops!

The English are grand, probably more reserved in general but you'd always find someone on your wavelength no matter what the nationality.

At least they're not into the "OMG that is so funny/hilarious" faux shíte the Yanks come up with.

Dublin humour is just toilet humour akin to Mrs browns boys, dumbed down craic

They won't be much craic at all when they have to start eating rats after Brexit. Or maybe that's how we became so good at craic, years of sh*te.

There’s nothing dry or deadpan about punctuating lame jibes with “wha” and “hweh hweh hweh.”

Spoken like a true bitter culchie.

"anything from Dublin is derivitive nonsense and all Dublin people are reprehensible".

    Glazers Out!

No one in this thread has made me laugh yet. Not a lot of craic to be had.

IME the English can have a great sense of humour but it is a country of 55M. Maybe Donncha mainly met the type of English who play and support Rugby Union and they're a bit dry, maybe he is talking rubbish.

I don't think you can make sweeping statements about entire nationalities. I've found "the English" vary from great craic to anything but great craic and the Irish are very similar in that regard.

I'd suspect he may also be just seeing England from the point of view of being a now mature professional rugby player and being sorrounded by people who will be more likely to be standing on ceremony around him and being more serious generally whereas when he's at home, people know him since his school days.

He's also probably comparing Ireland at a different stage of his career.

I've had fantastic nights out in England and have life long English friends. There are some differences and there's definitely more deference or at least reference to social class (and they're often not even aware of how much they do that), but they're still good craic.

I'd rather have a laugh with some random English people than Donncha O'Callaghan.

Craic is an energy. Doesn't translate on a message board.

Donncha O'Callaghan always strikes me as a very thick and dull person who's been led, by his equally thick and dull friends, to believe that he's 'great craic'.

Here's one...So a guy starts a thread about the English being no craic. Thread becomes Culchies v Dubs in record time.

    Boom boom!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,239 ✭✭✭✭ILoveYourVibes

Maybe he is just 'playing' to the home crowd etc.

Culchies and Dubs need to call a truce.

Or else get a LOT funnier about slagging each other off!

British are more craic than us there i said it!

A scouse is probably good craic, a brummie probably less so. There's no one "English" person. Someone from one area is probably more fun then someone on the other side of the same town. It's the same all around the western world.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,239 ✭✭✭✭ILoveYourVibes

We need to instate a nationwide breeding program for the 'craic gene'. The brits are gaining uncharted ground on this and leaving us behind!

Who can we put up for stud?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,810 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

The brits are no craic, they don't even try to have the craic, it's all about the bants with them, fúcking weirdos the lot of them.

Guess you just proved you don’t know what craic is. Thanks.
