Anyone see that interview with Donnacha O'Callaghan. He says they're polite and nice but "no craic". Is this an example of Ireland exceptionalism? I wouldn't call what English do when they go to football tournaments "having the craic" but it's not like they're all stuffy posh types. Of course, when he means having the craic he might mean something else. I do actually think it's a uniquely Irish thing. It's not like other countries aren't fun(Spanish I'd say are more extroverted and outgoing than Irish) but the craic is different. It's actually innocent enough messing combined with a self-awareness. There's gob****es who think they're great craic when really they're just ***** but I do think we have a unique sense of humour and happy go lucky attitude. Again, it's not like all Irish people are funny but it's like we have a national light hearted mentality.

We have a slightly different sense of humour. And we have lots of irish in-jokes. I think irish people are best in the world at irish craic. But that's not the only type of craic worth having.

We have our own sense of humour and it would be a bit arrogant to presume we have the best craic.

I think Dublin has a different humour from the west of Ireland. Dubs, have that fast wit even when they don't know it. Bit more cynical, deadpan and dry than other parts of Ireland

The English are grand, probably more reserved in general but you'd always find someone on your wavelength no matter what the nationality.

IME the English can have a great sense of humour but it is a country of 55M. Maybe Donncha mainly met the type of English who play and support Rugby Union and they're a bit dry, maybe he is talking rubbish.

I don't think you can make sweeping statements about entire nationalities. I've found "the English" vary from great craic to anything but great craic and the Irish are very similar in that regard.

I'd suspect he may also be just seeing England from the point of view of being a now mature professional rugby player and being sorrounded by people who will be more likely to be standing on ceremony around him and being more serious generally whereas when he's at home, people know him since his school days.

He's also probably comparing Ireland at a different stage of his career.

I've had fantastic nights out in England and have life long English friends. There are some differences and there's definitely more deference or at least reference to social class (and they're often not even aware of how much they do that), but they're still good craic.
