I can’t remeber the price structure a few years ago but I’m fairly sure you could get an entry level GTi for around 35k where as an R was always mid 40’s or higher so more like 10k difference min. Currently 7k in the price difference between a GTI and an R.

I don’t think running costs would be that much different, a GTi is already heavy on petrol an R is a bit worse but if you can run the Gti you can probably fuel the R also. The rest of the running costs would be pretty similar if not the same. The attention wouldn’t bother be in the least, I’d like the extra good attention (isn’t that part of the reason we buy nice cars) and I wouldn’t personally be a person who has any fear of “bad” attention.

I’ll be keeping my mk5 on the road for another while yet as we have bought a family car but when I do decide to garage the mk5 (not planning on selling it) and buy another fast golf I will find it hard to look past an R. Having a diesel family car also means the fuel costs won’t be an issue as it would be used for long trips etc.

Quick question lads, what do you reckon my car would be worth?

Wrong. Spec for spec, there was never more than 4.5-5k in it between a PP GTI and an R. Current prices:

GTI PP DSG: €45,170
R DSG: €49,525

A difference of just €4355. Then factor in the extra kit on the R that's extra on a GTI (19's, alarm) and that gap closes further. It's a very long time indeed since a Golf GTI was near 35k.

Spec for spec is a poor argument. Many will go for the cheapest option and lowest spec available meaning you can get into a Gti for a lot less than an R. Base gti is 42,370, that’s a significant amount cheaper than an R.

But the stats show there are more R’s sold so it’s a bit of a pointless debate really I was just surprised to see it.

The new VW’s have gone mad money now tbh. There’s a new GTI on carzone asking price of over €52k! I thought it must be a TCR, but no, it’s a regular PP with a couple of options ticked.... crazy.

The comparison is only in the context of sales. I would have expected the Gti (in general not a particular spec) to outsell the R as there are versions available that are considerably cheaper and thus would fall into more people’s budgets. But that isn’t the case as has been mentioned here.

I was at coffee and cars today in bray with my own R and counted six golf Rs there. MK7 and 7.5.

I don’t remember seeing a GTI. I’m sure there was one, just don’t remember it.

Interestingly there were two 2008 R32s.

I'm in Toronto at the moment, there's a ton of GTI's here. Only saw one R though. Not only is every BMW, Merc and Audi AWD they're all massive spec. 750i, 540i, S6, S7, Volvo S90 T6. Didn't even know it went above T5...

Obviously it snows here so the market leans towards AWD but everyone has good tyres on their cars. Not a single Chinese tyre to be seen.

I'm very surprised VW doesn't offer the Cupra spec on the GTI, 230hp would be somewhat low here. A lot of standard family cars are pushing 250-300hp and the standard Golf is the 180hp 1.8...

Big engined cars / suvs are the norm over there. Tax is only 12% afaik. U'd have a top spec GTI on the road for approx 27k euro!

The North American Golfs (not sure what other NA VWs) are made in Mexico so they are built much cheaper to begin with. A top spec GTI over there comes with a manual handbrake instead of the electronic one Europe gets and doesn't come with the Active Info Display (only the R gets that I believe). Fairly sure the power on the 7.5 over is the same as the pre-facelift here, 220hp.

I understand what you're saying, but it's not an apples to apples comparison.

Value of it will depend on what you’re trading it against or looking for a private sale.
I’m guessing 25 to 28 k ?

Just weighing up my options at the moment. It's a really nice car but I have other priorities in life now so considering reducing my outlay on getting from A - B!

I think 27/28 would be fair price if trading against a used car.

The new Polo really isn't a small car. I was parked in the NAC far away from other cars and arrived back to find a MkV Golf GTI parked beside me.

It's crazy that the Polo actually looks bigger than the Golf. I put up 500kms over the weekend and am absolutely loving it. It handles much better than my old '11 Fabia RS. I'm still recalibrating my mind to having "only" 6 gears again (the Fabia had 7sp DSG) but it has effortless shove for overtaking. It provided similar economy to the Fabia averaging 6.4ltr/100km and 6.7ltr/100km on 2 160km drives. My relative who recently got a new Mk7.5 Golf (below) struggles to better those figures in his 1.0 at times. The Active Info Display can be a bit of information overload at times but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The combination of DSG and adaptive cruise makes for a very relaxing long distance drive too.

It’s crazy how it can look both smaller and bigger and the same time, maybe it’s years of being conditioned to accept polos are smaller than golfs

I have to say your polo in that colour and spec has really opened my mind to the idea of one, looks great!

It's been 3 months and 6,000 km of great driving in my Golf GTI

... but the inevitable has happened... I've got my first scuff mark/scratch

And of course it's on a diamond-cut wheel (19" Brescia). I drove over 800 km at the weekend and it happened sometime then but I haven't a clue how. I didn't kerb it as I'm particularly careful when parking.

Do I need to worry now about the lacquer peeling and corrosion/white-worm? Thoughts?
