Sorry if wrong place, but would value Golf owner input. I'm getting a vibration sound / noise into the cabin while the car is stationary (and also moving). Seems to match engine rev's... its really starting to annoy me. Its been there a while, but definitely getting worse. VW said they couldnt hear it (a few months back).

I'm stationary here, and its very noticable from around 10 seconds in... Any ideas what it might be or an indy who could investigate it further?

I've pushed and pulled every piece of plastic and door panel that I can see/find....

It might be a sound actuator/soundaktor.

Easiest way to find out is to code it out temporarily or disconnect it.

Think Damo's suggestion is where I would look. Change the drive mode from race to eco to see if it changes. If it does then almost certainly that like sound device.

The soundaktor do vibrate on them, it's a known problem. Best thnig to do is code it out and see, if you're close to me i don't mind giving a hand with that.

    Switch off GTD mode..

Thanks folks, There seems to be a cause & effect alright if I going messing with the "Individual Settings" on the menu system... randomly switching the "Interior Sound" setting between "Eco", "Normal" and "Sport" and back again seems to have fixed it, so I'll do some more testing if / when the sound comes back, but it seems to be the cause alright.

Tossy, I'm in D15, where abouts are you? PM me. I might just get the thing coded out.

    Thanks for the tips folks.

Seen a few before where the actual Soundaktor speaker is loose in its mounting, sounded just like that. The solution is to remove the speaker, use fabric tape across the mounting points and refit. It's be handy enought to DIY.

Happens to mine too, just turned it off. Can set everything individually so I have everything in Sport and just the artificial sound turned off.

I coded my Soundaktor out as I’d read across many GTi/R threads on different forum of vibrations and noise and them coming loose.

Another pointless gadget whose only effect is a bad one when it breaks.

I have no idea why most people don't have that turned off nearly instantly anyway. It was one of the first things I did. Then changed the catback and intake, which I would much rather hear over a fake engine rumble anyway.

Take a listen to this podcast about car salesmen in american trying to make numbers.

    https://www.thisamericanlife.org/513/129-cars

They will even personally buy cars to make up the numbers or sell them to family.
Its a really really good episode .

Thanks for posting this. It was a good listen and a bit of an eye-opener!

Whilst I agree that people can and should turn off the fake sounds if they see fit not everyone wants to modify their car.

I hear so many people complaining about it, makes me think mine has never worked, :) because I've not issue with it at all.

I never had an issue with the Soundaktor. The "auto-adjusting" backlight on the dashboard pissed me off endlessly though. That I did code out.

Would love more options on the Mk7.5 display. Just doesn't feel sporty. Should change colour and light up like a Christmas tree when put in race mode.

Is it not accessible through the touchscreen on VWs?

Dials should be oled as well, they look a bit naff compared to the clarity of the touchscreen, would prefer ordinary dials.

the second part of my post was more my personal preference for what I'd like to hear. Same way that some people like hearing the soundaktor, for some reason.:p

I think for me it was just overly obvious it was fake and badly so, coming from a mk2 Focus ST, which compared to the Mk7 Golf is a lot noisier even as standard and in a very good way. :) The Golf without any tinkering is actually really really quiet, soundaktor aside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

The golf can't touch the MK2 focus in the sound dept though no matter what you do to it.

Thanks all, I have the sound actor coded completely out now. Let’s see if that solved the problem. It’s already sounding better. At least now I can hear the exhaust properly in sport mode. Surprising the difference it made actually.

Thanks to those for the VCDS support.

Fair enough, I agree the mk2 Focus sounds so well, can't beat a 5 pot.

Considering it's a screen and is software, I don't see why they couldn't update these things. The biggest downside to the Golfs digital dash is the complete lack of any dial change in sport mode like pretty much every car out there.

Some cars have a bit of a naff design but I know VW would pull it off well. Something like the Ford GT where it's just a nice big rev counter,
not too flash with gauges, maybe some small numbers on the side with boost, power, speed etc. customisable fields. Not expecting it to fold into a different screen like the McClaren 720, but something along the lines of a nice rev counter...

The newer digital dash on the Polo GTI and Cupra is nicer, more squared look. Physical fuel gauge etc.

Looks very well in white, the black one I saw isn't a patch on that.

Best of luck, keep us posted on how you get on.
