Faster Broadband = Faster VPN?

    I'm just wondering if a faster broadband automatically means a faster VPN speeds? I currently have FTTH 300mb down which is great, but when I use VPN on my Nvidia Shield to watch the BBC iPlayer, the speeds drop to around 15-20mb and I'm constantly getting buffering issues, no matter what UK location I use.

    I'm just wondering, if I upgraded my plan to say, 1000mb download, would that mean my VPN speed would also increase? Or would it still be the same as what I would get on 300mb?

    It'll stay the same, a paid VPN should be able to achieve higher speeds than that though

    It's reliant on what the end point can churn back out or 'upload' back to the network. Your DL could be 1000mb but if the end computer is uploading back at 20mb then that's the bottle neck, before it gets back up onto the tiered network and onto you.

    OK cheers. I'm using Express VPN and paying for it. My Nvidia shield is connected directly to the router via Ethernet, so I can't understand why it's so slow via VPN. Even trying to watch Plex (running from a PC directly in the next room) I have to turn off the VPN as the connection is too slow to run the Plex media server.

    the VPN shouldn't affect Plex - it's on the local network.

    I definitely notice a huge difference, i.e. when I turn off the VPN the media I run from Plex streams down really quickly. When VPN is on it struggles to stream and I have to pause it while it streams

    Some of the smart DNS providers like Getflix, unblockus etc would be a better option for iPlayer. No VPN involved.

    Plex discovery is via the WAN in the first instance, this could be tripped up by the VPN.

    I'm not sure if I have Plex set up in the most efficient way! I have a PC in the next room with all my media and some media is on an external drive connected to the router. On the Shield I have the Plex app running the Plex Media Player which streams directly from the PC and the hard drive in the router.
