Ireland is way too politically correct but we are still better some countries that have adopted cultural marxism as their national ideology. We are very laid back still and that is our strength. We dont have our police knocking on peoples doors to check their 'thinking' and we dont have the crap about 'insert any Irish company/service" as being too white.

'Political Correctness' can really mean any number of things, which is problematic. And mostly it's used as an insult, when it's refering to simply progressive ideas, which is also problematic.

Actual 'progressiveness' is also just a course-correction. The more people 'push back' against that course correction, the longer it will take. But it will have its way. 'Equality for everyone' is just too good an argument.

Could we have a definition of politically correct please. Just so we all know what we are talking about?

When we look back on this thread, this will be the point where the thread shot fanwards without a paddle and turned into a 40 page banfest. :P

I think Twitter/etc can be very Political Correct.
Some work places are very political correct and I'd say they'd be a nightmare to work for. Some work places tough aren't political correct. Well they may appear to be but the owners would never hire a politically correct person.
Regarding your friends/family. It all depends on who you mix with. I know some people and they'd be very politically correct and there family tip toe around conversations with them so they don't offend the person or cause an argument.

As someone else mentioned, there isn't even agreement on how Ireland is too politically correct.
Examples usually boil down to people being upset that they can't say whatever they want about another ethnic group, women, foreigners etc.
It's not like these people are being thrown in prison, someone tells them off for what they're saying and they run away shouting about political correctness.

    ???????????????????????????????????????

Twitter is an alt-right/Trump fan haven, and Jack Dorsey is heavily, heavily criticized for allowing it.

Companies like Disney have considered buying it but backed out because it's such a wretched hive of scumbags.

If we are ever going to get past the last five years of tearing chunks at each other, we are going to have to start studying Social Contract Theory. It is an argument as old as human philosophy itself. Some groups legitimately infringe on others and that must be stopped if we are ever going to progress as a society.

There are two large 'career homeless' demographics that negatively affect Ireland and yes, we need them to respect the society we have built. Otherwise all we're ever going to do is go round and around pointing fingers at each other.

But equal rights for everyone, irrespective of skin colour, religion, orientation or gender is a different argument altogether. But both kinds of arguments get tarred as being 'PC'.

That is the problem. And actually I think it affects people tarred as bigots more than anything. An honest discussion about Social Contract theory is a much needed first step with regards for what you're specifically referring to.

Two thirds of people are fucking idiots.

It is not just about controlling speech, it is also about censoring images, ideas or anything that might upset some tiny minority, society should be about the majority and what most people want and not what a tiny minority demand. People are all ready equal under the law and people are not held back because of their sex/skin colour so we are equal enough already.

Police have been known to warn people over certain tweets in the UK. And thats only 3 examples. The guy who taught the dog to do a nazi salute was facing jail.

What images could they be? Society is about including everyone for the better of all.

Eh, there is nothing that can be done about being discriminated at the interview stage of a job. No equality under the law stuff applies there. Of course once a person is actually employed, there is protection from discrimination.

The speech and imagery that is controlled (justifiably in my opinion) in most EU countries is that inciting hatred towards any groups that could result in violence.

I'm happy to subscribe to that and happy to let my elected politicians take care of it. They demur from enforcing that protection and we can vote them out.

You can’t call people brainless, racist fcukers anymore without them taking offence.

    Schitflakes the lot of them.

Not a fan of Churchill but his quote about free speech fits in with today's right-wing reactionary toadies:

Some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.

That's not 'checking people's thinking' as the poster said. That's cautioning or arresting people for breach of Public Order legislation.
I think you will find there is no law about calling a transgender person by their initial gender name.
Do you wish such legislation existed?

You want to rely on the Daily Mail for accurate legal reporting? Linehan and Hayden both come off badly and the latter was cautioned for a series of alleged harassment tweets. Not for one tweet. Hayden also warned by police. Seemed like handbags to me and they're both old enough to know better.
I've no wish for such restrictive legislation but am happy for the police to intervene to prevent violence as could have occurred in this instance. More likely to Linehan or family after address disclosures.

I think political correctness has gone too far. Peter Casey said a lot of nonsense but I didn't think his comments particularly vilified Travellers. Just because people belong to a minority it doesn't mean they are above criticism. I also find Michael D pompous salon socialist but since president has so little power a flower pot could be elected and there would be very little damage done. The hysteria in media around election was completely over the top.

There are morons here whose opinions and generalisations about Muslims or other minorities I find utterly deplorable and pure idiocy but that doesn't mean everyone who doesn't agree with whatever progressive cause is popular at the moment is a bigot and should be silenced. Just because people are a bit fed up with not being able to criticise anything without someone saying "you can't say this" it doesn't mean we are going to elect an Irish Orban in next election (and let's be clear Hungarians at the moment live a lot better than they did under previous government so he could have also support because of his economic policies). But if people get outraged everytime you don't call yourself cis male or cis female or use wrong pronoun then don't get surprised if large part of population gets fed up with the nonsense and there is a backslash.

If you're referring to Biko's and tipp gunner post, that never happened. It involved two people in a twitter spat where one(Linehan) revealed medical records publicly to tens of thousands of followers without the other's consent hence police involvement. The Daily Mail basically lied to get clicks and views.

As for pronouns, they won't get offended by mistakes and there is no law against it anyway. Only assholes who hate trans people deserve condemnation, not the ordinary person who is respectful.

I was actually talking about backslash and abuse against John Boyne for refusing to call himself cis male. It's completely disingenuous to pretend some people aren't hounded especially on Twitter for just having different opinion.

The problem with people is often that they are stupid easily misled.
PR agencies use this for various means all the time to sell stuff.
PR agencies are also used by politicians to help them win elections.

Example how PR agencies are helping drive PC and profit from it.
Climate change kid Greta Thunberg is helped by more than one person connected to PR agencies
    First Ingemar Rentzhog https://www.svd.se/english-version-swedish-start-up-used-greta-thunberg-to-bring-in-millions
Then Helena Iles, owner of "Iles PR Agency" (nothing in English yet)

Then we have people like Jussie Smollett and the BerMax Caffe that invent attacks to gain PC points.

If we allow PC to gain power, or to silence opposition, then we are sitting ducks for the people that want to profit from our gullibility.

Personally I'd be glad our Government didn't ostracise any group in society.

Particularly when it's a cynical vote catching gimmick.

I'd prefer that too but some groups have more champions than others.
I'd really like to know who is actually working for the real working classes for instance.

I'm not sure if many people have spoken with canvassers but every running platform is a cynical vote catching gimmick.

When in certain circles saying something as innocent and true as there are differences between men and women can be considered 'Hate speech' then I think things have gone too far.

I think people are sick and tired of the likes of RTE shoving political correctness down their throat. E.g., if RTE produces a documentary on Travellers, it will be 100% about how they are poor victims of settled people's racism and need more protection, more funding, more respect for their culture, etc.

There will be no mention of Traveller criminality, tax evasion, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and antisocial behaviour. No mention of how they take kids out of school at age 12 and marry teenage girls off to their cousins before they develop notions about marrying a non-Traveller. No mention of bare-knuckle fights and the mayhem that routinely ensues at Traveller weddings and funerals.

The reality is swept under the carpet, and a politically correct narrative is promoted.

People know this, and they are sick of the indoctrination.
