    Hi all:

I'm biting the bullet and applying for Irish Citizenship. I am married to an Irish national and have lived here over 10 years.

When applying, I think you have to send off your passport. Does this have to be the original, or are certified copies acceptable?

Secondly - If I have to send the original, how long is the document kept for and is it sent back via registered post or ordinary mail? I would be a bit uncomfortable if the passport was sent via ordinary post.

Sorry for all the questions, but can't call the helpline, as it seems to only be open for a limited time on Tuesdays only.

    TIA :)

    Yes, they need the original.

They generally return it within 6 weeks of applying.
