Car vs van

Currently looking for something CHEAP low engined size (1.3-1.6 diesel) for private use and sometimes to bring my dogs off in. Would there be much difference in insuring say a 1.6 diesel focus (put the back seats down) or insuring a small van like an opel combo 1.3 diesel ?

Any help appreciated.

You would probably find taxing and insuring a commercial vehicle as a commercial vehicle tricky as an individual. Just get a car really.

AFAIK commercial tax is 333 for the year , a 1.3 combo would be just a little bit over that but woudnt bother me

Get the van insured as a private van,tax as such, insuremyvan will do it,I'm doing it. No hassles

You could put private tax on the 1.3 combo for 353 euro I think and doe it as a normal van.
The insurance company will give you hassle about insurance on a commercial if you are not a tradesman and I know that from experience. I asked her before in Axa what a lad with no job,driving a transit and fond of horses and dags would put down as his trade.she had no answer.

Sound for the advice everyone , my occupation woudnt really factor if id use the van for work (security) il give axa and insuremyvan tomorrow for a few quotes

The biggest problem is taxing the van. If you want to use it as a commercial vehicle tax it at â‚¬333, use loading bays etc you need a tax clearance certificate and other ****e.

If you tax it privately the NCT centres probably won't accept it to NCT it, you won't get away with using loading bays but you will have cheaper tolls!

It's a cvrt,never a nct

I’m not so sure you will get cheap tolls in a van regardless of tax class if you go to the attended window.

However i get through the coin baskets about 80% of the time for 1.90 driving a commercial 4x4 (commercially taxed also), so I’d advise anyone in a commercial to use the coin basket lanes as you have a very good chance of getting through, look for older lanes (older looking big coin baskets) as these never appear to recognize the plate is a commercial.

I f you only want to take dogs in it something like a Berlingo Multispace might suit you.
No tax/insurance/test problems and you have the extra seats when needed.

Ive never needed a tax clearance cert or anything other than the Goods use declaration form.

It depends on your local authority.
Different ones have different requirements.
Best to look up the LA website, motor tax section to see what they ask for.

Are you looking for a car/van rather than a purpose built van? Something a bit more sporty?
How big are the dogs?
Whats the budget?
