    Hi All,
Just looking for some info as I've received mixed messages from driving instructors with regards when to use the handbrake.
I know for definite its meant to be used on slopes/ hills regardless of transmission type but, other than hill starts when should you use your handbrake in an automatic transmission?

    TIA

Anytime the car comes to a complete stop you should be using the handbrake

I passed my test 2 weeks ago and, apart from using it on slopes/hills which you have already covered, I was using the handbrake when, after coming to a full stop, it looked like I would be stopped for a while. This was
    usually
    - after pulling in at a kerb (obviously :D)
    - when waiting at traffic lights
    - when waiting to make a turn from a minor road into a major road where I could see no gap for 2-3 seconds.

During my reverse around the corner, it was a little busy, with vehicles coming from behind and ahead. So, I had to stop a couple of times to let them pass, and used the handbrake then. I hadn't used the handbrake in the course of this manoeuvre during my practice over the 2 months before the test (always practised on a clear road).

Apart from these scenarios, I didn't use the handbrake at all. So, for example, I wasn't pulling the handbrake up after stopping at Stop lines when I could see that I would be able to move off immediately after stopping, or that there would be a gap after a single passing vehicle. I also wasn't using it when yielding to vehicles from the right at roundabouts when I could see a gap after 1 or 2 vehicles.
I also didn't use the handbrake anywhere during the turnabout since it was a flat road.

Having said that, I don't think you can be failed for overuse of the handbrake. The only thing it might affect in my opinion is your progress e.g., stopping at a Stop line at a clear and open junction, putting the handbrake up might slow things down and make it look like you are hesitating even after having seen that it is clear. So, keep that in mind.

Correct, also make sure to use it if you are on a hill (even a small slope, if you think you are going to roll backwards, use it!)
