Ex-Pope Benedict XVI blames 1960s revolution for sex abuse https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47898562

That’s a new one on me, pretty sure there was plenty of this going on before free expression came along.

Well it isn't the churches fault so this is as good an excuse as any.

Ex pop should have stayed schtum cause now we know he’s a complete idiot.

Sexual revolution in the 60’s? Is he for real? It could possibly have nothing to do with having to remain celibate so the church keeps all the riches?

The Vatican is a den of filthy, greedy, child molesting, devil worshipers. Absolute scum.

They don’t have one pair of balls between them to come out any say the truth.

Always coming up with some excuse to make themselves feel better.

    It's no joke.

Very powerful, wealthy pedophile ring. Continue to be a danger to the weak and vulnerable.

I wouldnt agree, if i was celibate and a priest but really wanted sex,I would go see a prostitute. I wouldnt suddenly find kids attractive or rape single mothers.

The priest hood attracted these predators because they knew they could get away with doing what they wanted.

Well if Joe wants to use that sort of demented logic...

What helped cause the revolution in the 60's?

The baby boom aftermath of World War 2.

Who was in the German army during WW2 setting tank traps and protecting Nazi aircraft factories?

    Joseph Ratzinger.

So, its actually your fault Joe.

Possibly. But I think celibacy would have played a part in it too. I don’t thinks there’s been such a huge problem in the Anglican Church?

i'm still not clear as to why it was so much more rampant with Irish priests

Presumably 1950's abuse was due to Elvis.

Surprised he didn’t say that children were butt-ugly before the 60s.

99% catholic country that was very impoverished. The church had an iron grip on the country and everyone in it. Most of the population thought the church could do no wrong, and we’re deathly afraid of the church.

Possibly in later years Ireland became more enlightened and people were not so afraid to come forth? Who knows what the church did in South America?

Power? Being able to get away with it? Only the paedophile priests could answer that.

Think about the typical rural Irish family in the 50's/60's
    • Oldest Son got the Farm
    • Next oldest one got the education and became a Teacher, Guard or Civil Servant
    • The "weird" one got sent to the Priesthood

    Joseph Ratzinger.

16 years old in 1943 when he was drafted

I guess you would have been a hero and joined an underground resistance movement as a young teenager Rambo style

not saying youre wrong but that suggests there are a lot of paedos out there who just restrain their impulses because they wont get away with it. makes sense i guess

Something on the radio earlier. Think it said in 1996 97% of marriages here in Ireland were held in churches.

    Nowadays it’s dropped to 48%

How anyone still goes into those churches after all they’ve done is beyond me.

The problem was too much reverence and trust, it allowed men with nefarious reasons for being priests to get into positions where it made it easy to abuse.

I'm surprised he's saying anything to be honest. I thought that was part of the deal when he retired, that he'd stay stumm on issues, otherwise you've two guys who legitimately claim to be Pope going around making pronouncements about things.

Church involved in the wholesale rape and abuse of kids, but it's not the fault of the church? F##kin clown.

so power turned people into paedophiles?

Those that were could carry on with inpunity, and be given protection and tacid approval by getting moved to another parish.

There was a segment of the left who were for reducing or eliminating the age of consent.

However that’s no excuse for the Catholic Church of course.

Who knows. The British are not going to investigate.

I wonder how many members of NAMBLA had Irish surnames.

As an ex-pope shouldn’t he be, you know, dead?

Thought it was a job for life.

I really don’t think this is a racial/ethnic thing. That wasn’t the only organisation either - the UK had quite a large movement.
