4k gaming.. worth the splurge?

Currently buying parts and so far I have a ryzen 2700x, 16gb hyper x fury ram, rog strix b450-f mobo, corsair 750x power supply and cool master case but I can't decide if I want to go with a rtx 2060 for 1080p/1440p gaming or go full whack and get a rtx 2080/radeon Vii for 4k. This will be my first gaming PC and I currently own an OG PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

I think it all depends on your monitor really. It's not worth going 4k unless you have the screen size to support it.

Personally I wouldn't bother. 1440p/144hz is the sweet spot imo.

I don't think its worth it on pc but if you have money to burn why not.

1440p would be the sweet spot IMO.

1440P 144hz over 4K most definitely. Even just 1440p in general though is the sweet spot.

Unless you're playing hooked up to a good quality 40-50" TV you would hardly notice any difference anyway, certainly on a standard 4K 27" monitor it's a bit pointless for games.

I've been playing 1440p/144Hz since about 2015. Briefly considered going up to 4k, but given my gaming choices for PC it's just not worth it.

Having played 1440p/165hz on my gaming machine and playing 4k on my sons machine with a 28inch 4k monitor i have to say i much prefer 1440p

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say from personal experience, gaming on a 40" 4K 60Hz monitor (not TV) on a desk, is pretty great.

Having had 60Hz 4K 40" the past few years and recently swapped to 120Hz 3440x1440 35", I'm not sure it's necessarily a "better" experience, just different.

If there was a 40" 4K 120Hz I would have bought it.

Higher frame rates are definitely a better experience unless you are in the minority who can't distinguish between 60 and 120+ fps. It's not even close. For me 60hz feels and looks laggy compared to even 100hz.

Good luck getting a stable 120fps at 4k as well. That's why people recommend 2k/144hz. You will get a stable 100+ fps in most games with a single high end gpu. You won't at 4k. Even the highest end consumer gpu, the 2080ti, will only average around 60 fps on the highest settings in the latest games.

I actually haven't A-B tested them, but 35" Ultra Widescreen has nothing on 40" Widescreen for that entire field of view visceral visual experience.

In fairness a lot of those highest settings are useless, 8x SSAA is overkill. If you have a high resolution on a small display it's hard to tell the difference between FXAA and SSAA or MSAA unless you're trying to.

And you can get 120Hz at 4K depending on your game, I guess it all depends on OPs intended usage. But would recommend trying both. And 4K definitely isn't worth it for smaller display sizes.

As someone who games at 28" 4k @ 60hz, go 1440p. A 2080 won't be able to run everything at 4k maxed, I know my over locked 1080ti doesn't and it's a beast. You just end up throwing more and more money at it

I'm not even counting using demanding AA methods for the settings. That's just using basic FX-AA or T-AA. Sure some games will be closer to 100fps, mainly older titles. At 2k you will get 100+ fps in nearly all games and the card will maintain the power to do that for longer.

4k isn't worth it at any size unless you are happy with a 60hz experience.

Well considering I'm coming from an OG ps4 and Nintendo Switch all I've ever known is 30 fps haha

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'll go for a rtx 2060/2070 then and with the money saved get a really nice 1440p monitor

Get one of the higher-clocked/specced 2060s and overclock it to 2070 levels.

Just moved upto 3440x1440 @120hz and oh my.
Very little performance hit coming up from 1440p.
Picked up the Alienware ultrawidd 34’ and it’d bloody awesome.

Stands to reason.
That 1440 UW is only a 34% increase in pixels from 1440p.
Meanwhile 4K is 225% more pixels, and 8K is a ludicrous 900% more.

Safe to say we won't be seeing 8K gaming anytime soon!
