This is the small poll to ask from Irish car owners, how high or low should be the Irish car service prices. Please, no long talks

    1st option: The car size?
    Small
    Medium
    Big

2nd option: The type of service?
    Oil change
    Interim service
    Full service

    3th option: The price?
    Be reasonable

    Examples:
Small nissan micra, oil change, 35eur
    Medium, full service, 100eur
    Big, interim, 110eur

How the hell could a legitimate garage charge just €30 + VAT (total €35) for 4 liters of fully synth oil, an oil filter and labour?

Welcome to boards.ie but you are not being reasonable here :)

You can't have a matrix like that for cars. There's a cost difference between parts, different oil types, and even the labour involved in doing a service on certain cars, they're not all the same.

But my big car has the same engine as the small car...

The terminology of a 'full service' is pretty meaningless when most people use it. It could mean anything.

Theres too many variables to have a set price for each type of service.
You need the mileage of each car to determine what service it needs..
Then you`ll need to know the service history etc.

Full Service term seemed to be created to make non-car people happy when they are asked more than 150 Euro for a service.

They don't want to know more.

If it is more than 350 Euro then they will question so 0-150 is a service, 150-350 is full service even they may be the same service technically :D

You just cant compare 2x "full services" to each other.

If you look at a random service schedule such as this:

    page.h89.jpg

You will see the mileage determines the service schedule, R = replace(or newnew), I = Inspect.

Its this "I" that makes all the difference, if the part fails the inspection it needs to be replaced.! And thats only the engine!!

A "Full service" usually means going through all the oily wear& tear parts too on the driveline, suspension, brakes etc etc

Even a garage that advertises full service like https://advancepitstop.com/car-servicing/full-service/ cannot be more specific than €170 - €270, quite a gap

What quality parts would you use? Or are they all the same :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭mickuhaha

The system in use at the moment as far as I can see is that it's cost of parts that are OEM plus labor. OEM parts are only available at main dealers. This is to keep the car warranty. If out of warranty then an option should be given as to aftermarket or OEM plus labor. Thing is there is not a fixed time for doing different jobs or the same jobs on different cars and as a result most garages will charge as much as they can get away with.

OP what do you understand by interim service or full service.

My car (Honda CRV) has got following things listed in service book which needs to be done at certain intervals (time or mileage):
    - oil and oil filter change
    - air filter change
    - pollen filter change
    - fuel filter change
    - spark plugs
    - gearbox oil change
    - rear differential oil change
    - coolant change
    - brake fluid change
    - valve clearance adjustment
    - and probably few others.
And also obvious things like brake discs and pads, which needs to be changed depending on wear.

Would you classify all those as Full service? Cost of doing all the above could be well above €500.

Focus people, focus! Please do not go off topic. We all know what price range the big companies charge, that price are the public. I am interested about that, what price range the people actually expecting. Your feedback are important, because load of garage owners reads the boards.ie.
There is possibility that information be used on kickstarter (or other crowd funding) campaigns.
Answer only by next format: Car size, service type and expected price/range

CiniO, every car have a different setup and the price can varies car by car. The price range are acceptable

I took the micra for the sample only because it is popular small car. The smart uses bit less oil, but that car you can see may be once a week or less.

I'd also not agree with classifying price by car size.

My civic is certainly smaller than CR-V, but normal service cost might be much higher.
I.e. CR-V is petrol and requires 4 litres of oil (I use 5-40) which i buy for €20. On top of that is oil filter and air filter for €15, so for €35 you can have all parts needed.

Civic being smaller car, but diesel, will need 6 litres of 0w30 (€75) + oil+air filters (€25) + fuel filter (€30). Worth mentioning that changing fuel filter here is close to 2 hours labour, so this rises service cost drastically.

In above example, garage could do the service on CR-V for €100 and make good few bob, but doing service in civic would require €200 to just cover basic costs and labour.

    +1
A mercedes SLS costing less to service than a dacia duster would be some job.

    so just to be clear...
you have no idea what people expect to pay or should pay(judging by your micra quote)
and are actively putting together a business plan and instead of doing some proper market research your trying to use boards for your own gain....

+1. I change my own oil and filters and brake pads and general service items and just the oil alone - and my jalopy doesn't take much, just under 4 litres - comes to 70 quid(millers nanotech race goo), the filter is another tenner, the air filter around the 30 quid mark. My labour is cheap at two cups of tae and a small cigar. And much muttering.

Hang on. Seems like English is not your first language and that's cool and maybe tone is lost in text, but who died and made you god of "the Boards.ie"? You come on here looking for free info from people and you a stranger in the place and then get all upset because we're not jumping to attention? Talk about rude. Go away with ye.

This is the hot thread, so I barking under the right tree. Only the mods and users ruined the thread. Here is the answer for them - the oil store. Does it makes now sense?

What are you think, how much are the real cost on 35eur nissan micra k12 oil change? 10eur + tax! 35-tax 28.45- oil/filter/seal 10=18.45eur pure profit. 3 car per hour makes pure 55.35eur for garage hour rate. Now we get the real storm here

Please continue by requested format! The car size, service type and the expected price range

3 cars per hour , one rounded or cross threaded sump plug , threaded filter mounts and boom your schedule is way off,

Most garages make more than 55 an hour

Performing a basic inspection taking 10-15 extra minutes could both provide an upsell opportunity and potentially find an unroadworthy car defect.

Also there is a cost to remove the waste oil filters, 55 euro ‘profit’ will get eaten in rent, rates, staff cost etc.. this business model is just unviable unless you were servicing literally hundreds of cars per day in a 15 bay super garage

What new idea do you have that will rock the car servicing trade when you don't even appear to know what you are trying to beat? You should have had this information before you came looking here.

To answer your question. The average Irish person will spend zero on basic maintenance and then complain that the NCT is a money making scam because their car failed.

55 quid profit if everything other than paying the mechanic and buying the parts is free for a garage.
