That's the type of thing the League of Ireland would want to steer clear of. The whole joy of watching LOI is you are watching your peers run around play football, not some overpaid millionaire, the mad money the lads above are on is better invested back into the club.

The league is a great product as it is, it is convincing people of that, not diluting the product by bringing in has-beens.

It's evidently not a great product though. If it was, it would be doing better. It needs to be looked at/revamped

I've heard this a few times now about 'nobody else has come up with ideas' etc and it's not true it all. It just might be ideas that you individually think won't work so they aren't counted. Niall Quinn put forward some ideas a few weeks ago, I personally didn't agree with a number of them but he put them forward none the less. Brian Kerr has mentioned for years about his ideas for the LOI at various stages. Opinions and ideas are everywhere, you just need to count the ones you don't agree with as well.

The ideas aren’t up here though. I think people meant that no one here on the anti Delaney side really has any ideas on how to improve Irish football. It’s all just sack Delaney, sack the board, disband the FAI, have a boycott. A load of fanciful notions that’ll never happen.

There was one poster who put something up about improving corporate governance but other than that?

I wish there was more debate around how to improve Irish football here or on other threads but ideas do seem short on the ground.

I have my own idea how to improve Irish football that I put up here that no one addressed.

You can't keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.
The SAME bunch of people have been at the top of the FAI for decades at this point. Very few positives have resulted in what they have been doing, if anything things have gone backwards.
The first step is to remove them - surely you can agree with this? They've had their time - time for a clear out.
There are plenty "ideas" on this and on other threads/other media.

Someone above said you have to give JD credit for certain things. No, no you don't. He is exceptionally well paid and well looked after for whatever he does. That's his credit.
If you want to give credit give it to the countless volunteers and low paid staff on the ground who do their best to keep the wheels turning.

Or maybe it is a decent product that needs to be marketed a lot better and also needs some investment to improve the match day experience. Both would be fairly simple jobs for a competent FA.

Maybe but I’m not sure there’s a viable product there even if it was well run.

The LOI has never really been able to make money or get the public interest it needs.

Now hopefully it can but the fact remains it never has and that’s under Delaney, the FAI or when it ran itself and the likes of shelbourne bankrupted themselves.

I also think a huge blame has to put at the door of the board members who allowed the FAI to become a cash cow for one man namely John Delaney, obviously have no moral or backbone, only thinking of themselves and their own importance.

You can't just take the on pitch quality to be "the product". You've mentioned the match day experience yourself. Like it or loathe it, match day experience (including facilities) is part of the product and is sadly lacking.

One of the most common things you will hear from a first timer at a LOI game: "the standard is a lot better than I expected". The problem is getting them through the door in the first place, there is a fallacy that the standard is crap, although I think people know that it is not and it's just an easy excuse to not go.

MLS, A-League, China etc. All thousands of miles away from Europe. In Ireland we can hop on a E19.99 return flight, go to a premier league game and be home in time for last orders to tell all the lads in the pub how great "we" were today.

We also need to get away from the 90 mins, there is more to LOI football than what happens on the pitch. It is a community, and needs to be more focused on that aspect, there is more to be learnt from the GAA then the Premier League. English football is an entertainment business, the primary goal is to keep the shareholders happy (or to help launder their money), Irish football is about your local club, local community, it is a labour of love and sometime abject misery.

I think if you are looking at bringing in "superstars" to improve the league and get people in, you don't get it and probably never will.

We can't and shouldn't be attempting to match the Premier league, however a complete revamp from junior level up would lead to a far better league and a far better national team. Bohs had 8 players away on international duty this week, less players are going to the UK at a young age, there needs to be a good league here for them to develop, nearly every player that went over at 16 tells stories about how the system swallowed them up and spat them out. I have never really understood how national team supporters tend to be so against the league, even if they have no interest in going to games a strong league can only be of benefit to the national team.

Its allleged that the 100 grand was in fact an attempt to decieve his wifes lawyers in regards to his assets. Should be forced to step aside immediately.

Absolutely, on the pitch will come if everything around it improves. Clubs are doing what they can and the news coming out of Bohs at the moment is fantastic compared to where we were a few years ago, so much being done in the community, the link with St Kevins looks like its going well.
Clubs are doing a lot and this might not show for everyone because a guy didn't get asked to renew his season ticket in 2004 but things are improving despite the FAI.

If that is indeed the case he should be forced to resign in full from the FAI, totally unethical, and him a Chartered Accountant by profession !

Yes but for the third time the story about the 100k loan emerged within the divorce proceedings so at first glance at least it doesn’t appear like anything happened other than Delaney disclosed the loan to those proceedings.

And therein lies the problem with a massive amount of LOI fans. A refusal to accept that they need to try something different in order to attract people to games. The Marquee player thing is just one element if what I suggested. It might not be the right way to go about things, or could be the thing that drives attendence increases. But you will never know due to the reluctance of so many around the league to change.

While you're correct that bigger leagues are available just a short flight away, that fallsw to acknowledge that the LOI runs a different season to most major leagues, and even the weekends when it does clash, a lot of the fixtures don't directly clash with EPL games.

There is too great a disparity between the haves and have nots. The standard may be better in Dundalk and Cork but these are fully professional clubs very well funded and supported. The rest are nowhere, absolute minnows. This makes things boring. It was a far, far better league back in the days when it's ethos was entirely amateur.

Shows what you know. Cork will be doing well to finish 3rd this year.

Banked on winning league last year and have had cut backs this year as a result

How exactly has it got more boring?

1980-1990 5 Diff Teams won league
1990-2000 6 Diff Teams won league
2000-2010 5 Diff Teams won league
2010-Present 5 Diff Teams won league

You realise most leagues, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy (1 winner) England etc all have same teams winning over and over again

This seems like nonsense by people who do not have the first iota of how family law cases are run.

It amounts to saying her Solicitors, despite all the procedures available in the case progression process, or the discovery system, might have overlooked huge sums of money missing in his Affidavit of Means. If I were them I would be rather annoyed by this angle.

I would safely say that is the difference between a full time English club earning millions and paying professionals to do their marketing for them. Then think about a LOI club living on the border line trying to do the same with people giving up their free time to keep the club running. Simple fact is the man power, know how and budget are not/were not available.

It's a mail alert, not rocket science. Any member of the club, with basic IT skills could do it for them.

I'm not acting daft. I know how these things go. I'd wager you anything that it was a perk which was requested and agreed as part of his package. They should have told him to .... Bigger fools them, as I said before.

Most clubs try to hang on to season ticket holders. For example Dundalk phone you personally and ask if you are renewing. Email promotion by clubs should be a way forward.

Good to hear and I agree with you 100% about email. It's a great way to reach out to potential customers very easily. Cheap as chips also.

I've always looked at the Irish international support as more Celtic at it's core than domestic Irish football. Is there not a sense of apathy among domestic supporters towards the national team?

I've been searching and its seemingly very hard to find out what the CEO's of other associations earn. Tried the Irish FA, FA of Wales, SFA, IRFU. All of these should be comparable to our own operation but I can't find anything. All I can find is an article from 2 years ago when he took his paycut which still had him earning more than the CEO's of the Spanish and Italian FA's combined.

Needless to say I assume they're on a lot less than the President of the United States who Delaney is right up there with! His remuneration package is obscene without even taking into account he's done nothing for the advancement of the game in his 14 years and whoever replaces him needs to be on far less money. Even our national team managers are paid too much compared to other similar sized and not very successful countries.

This is the failure to get a call back about renewing season ticket in 2004 again? It's not the only marketing needed to keep a club going and Bohs are operating at a far more professional level nowadays, head down to Dalymount tomorrow to have a look at the crowds, you wont get in however as home end is sold out for the 4th game in a row, cant imagine too many away tickets left either.

I went to a few Ireland games when Kerr was appointed and seemed to make a push towards getting more LOI fans involved but it's not about that apathy both directions although again you would think this is something the FAI should look at trying to repair and improve. It's simply about the basic fact that stronger youth and top level football in this country will lead to a better national team.

Therein lies the problem of a massive amount of non-LOI fans. All the solutions and none of the input. Proposing solutions costing hundreds of thousands, with their hands firmly outside their pockets. Most clubs are on the breadline. It's all pub talk until you actually do something about it.

Clubs are always trying out new ideas. Take for instance the Bob Marley Bohs jersey, I say you as with all non-LOI supporters (and probably lots of LOI as well) had a good chuckle at that. It is the best selling Bohs jersey of all time, and counting.

Even if you aren't directly clashing with a EPL game you are still competing, it is not that that is stopping people from attending.

BTW my club has just sold out it's 4th game in a row, a team of part-timers. We have seen a huge upturn in support around the team the last couple of years, with a great buzz around the place. All driven by volunteers, community initiatives, a real connection with the local community. Not one Marquee signing in sight.

Uhu Super Glue.....off to bed with you. The FAI cant afford to pay overtime and you will have to be fit tomorrow. A lot of searching to do to find all the flags and tennis balls. Hope you tell JD this time about what you are doing. Would be a pity if JD had to lie again on camera by saying he doesnt know anything about searches etc.
