Thought the Ricky Gervais show was boring. Bring back Stephen Merchant. Too preachy and nothing new.

Not terrible or anything but a big fat meh. Reminds me of Louis CK show in the later years

Binged 'After Life' today on a day off.. only 6 episodes at 25 minutes a piece.. and really enjoyed it.

An incredible comedy cast supporting Gervais including the hugely underrated Tom Basden (brilliant in this), Diane Morgan, Roisin Conaty, Kerry Godliman, David Bradley, Joe Wilkinson, Ashley Jensen, Paul Kaye and Tim Plester to name just a few.

It's not going to win anyone who doesn't like Gervais (and he does have plenty of detractors) over, but it's very well written for the most part, witty at times, sad at others and has some great music featured throughout also.
I watched the first 3....I really enjoyed it and TBH I wasn't expecting too, rather touching, some bits hilarious as well. The cast is fantastic.

The Stephen Merchant thing is weird.. lots of people often reckon Merchant was the talent behind their success. And I really like Merchant in interviews.. he's more likeable than Gervais. But to be honest, his TV effort 'Hello Ladies' was horrible.

Gervais, although some of his shows are better than others, hasn't had anything as bad as 'Hello Ladies'.

Anyways, still think 'After Life' is good but not for everyone!

Maybe it's a case that they balance each other our. Merchant tones done Gervais' nasty streak and Gervais sharpens Merchant's comedy up.

    Yeah, true enough.

Though I still think Life's Too Short was very disappointing..

I think Merchant gave Extras/Life's Too Short/The Office their edge, I know that Derek was slightly different in tone but it's very black and white and quite safe, you could definitely tell Merchant wasn't involved, Life On The Road was the exact same, there was no realy nastiness/awkwardness to David Brent, Gervais turned him into a fumbling, lovable idiot, which was a far cry from The Office.

It's somewhat similar with Alan Partridge, original writers no longer involved and you can tell with the direction the character has gone

Did Merchant and Gervais fall out?

It's often asked of each in interviews, and they'd both say they haven't.

Merchant most recently has said something along the lines of that never say never that they'll work again but they're happier working on individual projects at the minute.

I loved the Office and Extras. Derek was meh. Not a fan of Gervais standup and i think he comes across as a bit of a twat in interviews.

    His Golden Globes were mighty.

I binge watched After Life today. Given the premise it delivered. Gervais has a handle on pathos and he mixes it well with comic relief.

Just watched Free Solo from recorded on National Geographic. Amazing human achievement and hard to believe people like this even exist. Is Alex Honnold the greatest sports athlete of all time??

Hes an idiot with a probable death wish. And a strong grip.

I watched that Isn't it Romantic one tonight.
I thought Liam Hemsworth was the best thing about it. Genuinely funny.
Probably doesn't help that I don't like Rebel Wilson or Adam Devine. Which is a shame because I think it was a decent premise and the way they skewered so many romcoms while still kind of leaning into that makes the good ones enjoyable was really well done. I just would have liked it more with two other leads.
The director, I forget his name now, did The Final Girls a few years ago which is actually in a slightly similar vein to this except it's teen slasher films they're paying homage too. It's a lot better than Isn't it Romantic though. It was on Netflix for a while, not sure if it still is. Worth seeking out though.

I'm half way through this. So far I think its his best stuff since The Office possibly his best. I'm full on laughing and full on crying at least once in each episode.

I thought it was terrible, had me wondering why there was no reason given to why the guards raided his house.

I saw this at the cinema in EIFF last year, and honestly it's probably better suited for home viewing as little of the experience is significantly cinematic. There's the core of an interesting idea there, but drawn out a bit longer than I'd like.

Watched it last night myself and found it really enjoyable. Never quite sure what to make of Devine, find him irritating in some things but he was toned down in this movie and therefore watchable.

Yeah, I'd agree this wasn't one of his more annoying performances but he's just one of those people who seem to be playing basically the same character all the time. Him and Wilson give off the impression they're improving a lot too but in that really annoying way where it's not funny and feels like they're just saying random things hoping something works.
That said it's really not a bad little film and it's only about 90 minutes so it zips along nicely and it does some clever things with the Rom com staples.

Alex Honnold is a legend. Hes great in interviews too. Check out 'The dawn wall' on Netflix too. Its another great climbing film about free climbing a different route up El Cap to Honnold. Free climbing uses ropes but very little else. Good watch, Highly recommend.

After watching Isn't it Romantic last night I decided to watch an actual romcom tonight. Heard good things about Set it Up so stuck it on. Really liked it. It's got all the usual tropes but the script is tight, the two leads are charming and funny and likable. Worth checking out.

Set it up is good, Netflix have produced a couple of decent ones, I would also recommend

After Life is very good for the most part but didn't like the final episode
went down the very obvious sentimental route
still though, was much better than I had expected it to be and in episode one where he calls the child 'a fat ginger ****' was brilliant

Never seen Brooklyn nine nine, is it worth watching

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,134 ✭✭✭trixiebust

After sitting through 8 hours of absolute ****e watching "You".

I know it's 10 hours long, & the first two episodes were very good, but from then on it dragged on so much, with one unbelievable plot twist after another.

Would have made a good two hour movie, but not a 10 hour drama/thriller.

Even worse, they left it on a cliffhanger for season 2. Ha Ha...
