carbolic soap: is it dangerous?

Just bought a chunky bar of carbolic soap. I suppose I thought this was what was used in the good old days. A good scrub and all of that. But I noticed on the package it said: don't get into eyes and wash thoroughly with clean water if that happens.
What's that about? It's soap except it's better not to wash your face in case it gets in your eyes? It's a bit like buying an umbrella but you're advised not to open it if it rains.
Is there a problem with carbolic soap?

It's better not to get any soap in your eyes surely? Doesnt matter what type, it will all sting. I manage to wash my face daily without rubbing it into my eyes

All soap would have that warning on it, getting anything in your eyes other than a spec of dust when watching a video about a dog being rescued is not the best idea.

Carbolic soap is made using carbolic acid - a form of phenol. Phenol may cause reaction and may be considered to be toxic when over used etc ..

Is it a better soap than other types? It certainly has a distinctive smell.

I doubt that any actual soap could be as dangerous as a TV soap. What's the EastEnders body count up to at this point?

You would be safe enough unless you ate about three of them.

it should be marketed as such. The only people I know who use it get weekday mass and have those freaky Sacred Heart with the flickering light in their hallways.

I wouldn't think carbolic soap is dangerous but it would probably be rough on sensitive skin. The worst it could do is dry your skin out or make you a bit itchy. As for not getting it into your eyes it says the same thing on every bottle of shampoo. I assume most packets of soap say this as well although I haven't noticed.

Also steer clear of carbolic smoke balls.
