I wonder do they require you to do a course on how to drive those cars probably especially the M2. I can just imagine someone who has never driven a powerful car spinning that M2 on a damp road and end up in a ditch very easily.

Few bags or cement in the boot and you'll be fine. Have your no claims bonus insured

Insurance is included in the rental price afaik.

The 1500 on your credit card might be an issue

leave the traction control on and you will be fine, just stay away from MDM of off if you not on warmish dry roads and you know what your doing.

    Or a Porsche Cayman! :O

That aimed at me?!? Wasn’t driving it!!

Automotive Team who are managing the BMW cars manage the press fleet for a lot of the brands so they regularly maintain cars, wash them and prep them etc so these cars could end up being regularly looked after. I’d say they’ll refresh the fleet regularly (probably) too!

I'd imagine 1500 wouldn't cover 4 tyres on the M2 but it probably covers abuse more than anything else and might deter it more than anything else.

Maybe I'm just getting old but the X3 M40i is intriguing more than the M2 to be honest. Most of the youtube videos give it favorable reviews and say it's a surprisingly fun and capable car to drive. I normally would have no interest in SUVs but this has caught my eye and curiosity for some reason.

I think it was fitzgeme linked to an M4 for sale which had the blue ///M calipers turned green from hard use. You wouldn't need to be a rocket scientist to work out it was an ex mondello car.

I'm driving the X3 M40i to Killarney next weekend, can't wait for it to be honest. Id say it will be a good bit of fun on the ring of kerry.

I only booked it last week as well as had to wait for my 3 month free trial to be over before I could get it. Might book the M2 during the summer when I'm off for a few days.

The San Marino Blue is one of my favourite colours, I wonder will it be available on the new 3 series, a 3 series M340i in that colour would be class I think.

Nice. Let us know how you get on with the X3 M40i.

There is another yellow one for sale ex mondello and there will be another yellow and a red coming online soon. Watch out for these low milers ones. 5000 mondello miles is a hard life...spun crank hub anyone???

So do you have to wait until the free trial is over before you can rent anything?

You know what, I actually would like to drive the X3 M40i as well - not because I like such cars, but just to see what it's like more than anything else. The latest X3 is a really nice bus inside as well.

You have to wait until whatever free trial you have is over, I was on a 3 month free trial since Black Friday so was only able to rent in the last week or so.

They told me they only have 1 of each vehicle and they said if its popular they would get more, I told them I'd like an M5 for a weekend!!

Really looking forward to taking her for the weekend to see how she compares practically to a 5 series touring. I already know the performance will blow my 520d out of the water so I'm excited. The winding roads of the ring of kerry should be fun as well.

Does one need to own a bmw in order to join bmw first?

I don't think so going by their website, but yet it seems quite pointless to join "BMW First" if you don't, in fact, own a BMW.

I'm not really sure what this service is trying to achieve - one would imagine it'd be tailored towards somebody who drives a different brand and has looks at M cars with interest, but would like to test one first. I'd say only a very minor chunk of average chums in a 318d would actually ever consider an M2/M4.

As for wrapping them around a post...you'd need to be a clueless moron, really. Enough of a moron, in fact, to deactivate all the electronic nannies on a slippery road; I've done a blast in a 510HP Giulia Quadrifoglio around a wet country road, and it's really impossible to spin it / even get the tail to step out. Unless you're daft and put it in race mode...

I wonder if BMW could have slightly modified the computers on these rentals to make it impossible to deactivate the driving aids...

I would only be joining to rent an M car, plain and simple. How much is it? I couldn’t find a lot of info on the website

I swapped the back end with the front in an M car I owned with full driving aids on twice in a little over a year. Wasn’t going fast, the semi slick tyres were probably partly to blame and mildly slippy roads. It can be done easier than you think!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

My sister done it in a 318is that's the last time she drove a BMW. It's easy enough.

My card has the reg number on it. I think you'd need to give a reg for one to join.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

Thanks to the power of this thread, I've now signed up.

They do ask for your reg number by the way, and you need to sign up for the 2 for 1 thing otherwise you can't hire one of the cars.

I'll be able to hire from April apparently! Trying to decide if I take the M2 or 440i first!

This came up on my You tube feed after discussing san marino colour the other day. Stunning car.
My computer is definitely watching me.

with regard to the BMW first subscription, can you avail of the wash as often as you like and can you use more than one dealer for the services?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

According to the website you can have it washed and vacuumed once a month at a dealership. There is also a "premium" exterior car wash at participating Circle K service stations.

I only have the service and repair package and tend to clean my car myself for the most part so have no idea what's the benefits of the dealer v Circle K doing the above. I don't know either if you can avail of both a dealer and Circle K wash in the same month.

How much is the rental, how much is the monthly and is there a minimum term on the subscription?

Rental is €150 weekdays or €200 for a weekend which is actually fair enough. Monthly is €5 on the lowest package and you can cancel anytime you like.

Anyone know what the availability is like? I'm sold if its not a 6 month waiting list for something nice.

If you have any regard for your BMW you wouldn't let a dealer touch it, they'd destroy the paintwork on you.

So what’s the benefit to BMW with this scheme?
Keep customers coming in regularly to the showroom while getting cars washed in the hope they might upgrade?
Keep customers with older cars in the dealer network for servicing?
I find it hard to see what is in it for them.
I agree with previous poster by the way about the quality of the wash you can get from them. They can do more harm than good sometimes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I guess BMW ain't making much money from it but it might help keep their dealer parts and servicing departments healthy, though with all the EGR valve replacements going on at present I don't think they sitting around with their hands in their pockets.

The performance car rental is probably designed to promote or keep the brand going among current owners. Reality is most of us will never actually get to own one of these cars but I'm sure having the taste of one for a short period would only fuel the aspiration to perhaps own one someday or at least move up the brand range to more interesting cars. It's good PR for them.

Is there a limit on how often you can rent with them??
