It's a pity I can't hear 648 Khs during the day and at night it's a lot clearer but interference from Spanish stations. Not a great frequency to have, pity they can't add a few Kw of RF power !

Nothing on 648khz for me during the day either -- it kicks in about 8:30 in the evening on the good old Hacker Hunter sometimes with the Tecsun loop sometimes without .
On the car I've replaced the whip aerial with one about 3 foot long -- big difference on all bands.

Nice one, looks the job alright. I thought the AM in cars used the back demister for AM ?

    Not on my wreck !!
Easily proved by unscrewing the whip with the radio on -- or even just grabbing the whip on a weak signal.
Maybe different on newer vehicles if they even have MW/LW on the radio or just DAB and VHF/FM.
For best performance -- you can't beat a long whip !!

My SDR would probably be better with a loop antenna on a rotator to help null out interfering stations but I think it wouldn't matter with Caroline because the signal is a bit too weak against the adjacent much stronger Spanish stations.

I'm a bit further away from Caroline than you and have fairly good reception at night. I am using a very directional aerial though.
Of course with skywave, even a directional aerial may not work the best as the direction of the signal can change.

I can pick it up well at night but it comes in and out.

November Radio Caroline North / Manx Radio link up takes place on the week end 24th / 25th November.
Although 1368 khz MW is on reduced power for mast repair -- 2.5kw at the week ends into one mast only making it omni directional -- the signal is still available in West Wales.
Hopefully the more settled weather forecast for this week will help in getting the work done and full power restored by the 24th November.
    Have fun
    Regards

Yeah 1368 sounds good, what did they do ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 594 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

As far as I know they replaced both masts so it's back to 20kw according to Chris Williams this morning .
It was omni directional and on reduced power for a while when work was being done so as not to fry the chaps doing it !!
Now back to directional North /South and full power .
I stand to be corrected of course -- but it's a darn good signal at my home in Pembrokeshire and when out and about in the car .

Have a great week end .

    Mad_Lad .
This from someone who knew the guys doing the work:
Quote: "very expensive refurb. I think it's to do with ensuring that the Manchester area doesn't get a strong signal, protecting 1377kHz.
The good news is that, at the flick of a switch, they can just excite one of the masts if they ever wanted to go omni. Not only this, the refurb work established that by, by grounding the western mast, (which they had to do for safe working on it), and just exciting the eastern mast, the signal is actual improved towards the Liverpool/Manchester conurbation, because the western mast acts as a reflector."

    Fascinating, thanks a lot.

Yeah, I'm reading more about reflectors in ham radio seems to work really well.

    Thanks for that.

If you get a chance log in to one of my SDR, this one has more bandwidth available at the expense of only allowing 3 connections instead of 4.

I have it set to 15 Khz , it sounds pretty good, unfortunately due to compression the Kiwi sdr Audio quality wouldn't be as good as on say a SDR Play.

There's some popping from all the poxy electric fences around me 360 degrees , the NB function should help.

I drop by your SDRs every now and then -- the 8073 one is better on 1395 khz - Energy - which I can receive over here on the car radio .
    Anyway -I digress.

Yeah it's a little better , the 8073 sdr antenna is better for some signals and the MegaDipol better on others, it pulls in DX signals better especially above 7 Mhz and above, then the Loop can be better again above 25 Mhz.

The Loop can be quieter too which is nice sometimes.
