Looking like a hobgoblin is probably as useful in Hollywood as being good looking; you'll never be out of work as a character actor. Buscemi, William Dafoe and William H Macy all fall into this category.

Gene Hackman would be a classic example. I think i read he was hired for his first acting gig because of his (lack of) looks.

One of the best actors ever, though.

I'm not sure about that...I always enjoy watching him, but I don't think he ever strays too far from playing Gene Hackman.
