N47 engine egr module has to be replaced, whether it's showing signs of leaking or not. N57, on the other hand, just needs to be checked and only replaced if it's faulty.

I was told my part number fell out of the scope of the recall and no need for it to be replaced once checked that it was fine. Hopefully they know what they are at in regards to which need replaced.

Looked it up to see what all the hype is about so from what I can gather the EGR cooler / heat exchanger has the potential to leak coolant ie glycol into the exhaust gas recirc stream which could potentially but unlikely cause a fire. I wonder how they are actually checking the cooler integrity are they pressure testing, helium leak testing. Or maybe just some technician stares in and puts a light on it and says ah that looks grand hopefully not though.

As far as the EGR issue goes on these BMWs, I'm waiting to see what happens down the line if any of the ones that have been OK'd so far develop the issue and catch fire. I'm hoping of course that it doesn't happen but by God the owner will have them by the BMW balls!

How do BMW record if the gave the okay on this or not?
Is any documentation passed to the customer if the okay the EGR?

I would assume if there is no paperwork for the customer this would be very difficult to follow up on.

Also, if it is okay but likely to give trouble in future then why the hell are these not being replaced now?

As far as I know it's all part of the service history. I will actually look into it in relation to my own car now that you've piqued my interest!

Could the service history actually be trusted is what I'd be wondering.

God forbid but supposing your car went up in flames and there was a pile up or big accident caused where BMW were on the hook for a lot of money, could that EGR checkup report disappear and they blame the customer instead.

I got a print out saying all was well. Will be keeping that in the house and not that car mind 😂

Come to think of it, I too got a printout in one of those fancy sleeves :D

It would certainly be included in the service history if you get that printout since anything like that is all linked.

Anyone ever used an Irish company to re-trim a steering wheel? I would like to get the Supra wheel redone in Leather with red stitching, I know I could use ROYAL STEERING WHEELS in the UK but are there any local options?

Can't vouch for them but I've heard good things about this company.

I used Nolan Autocare years ago. They’re excellent.

A&T Autostyle in Kilkenny will do a fantastic job, Royal Steering Wheels IMO will do an even better job!

My buddy got a whole interior retrimmed by them, workmanship is excellent, he didn't mention much about the customer service as he just went up and dropped them there/talked with them

Having a quick look on donedeal for e60 523i and 525's.... absolutely nothing. 523i's were a dime a dozen when they were new, where have they gone?! I know the diesels were everywhere, but I thought around 2006->2008 there would be oodles of I6's.

Still can't get through to A&T autostyle, have tried email, phone and fb and no answer. Anyone know are they still in business, would rather buy Irish than send to royal steering wheels

I'd say any were either put off the road, traded as part of a scrappage scheme for a brand new ecobox, exported for a VRT refund or broken for parts as they were uneconomical to repair.

A 08 here with cheap tax for 3k:
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-523i-in-very-good-condition/20884010

Another one here but you might not want to live with the seats:
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/08-bmw-523i-auto/20828842

There are a few 06/07 for sale too but asking prices seem to be bordering on dreamer territory for them.

Have you considered an E90 or E92 325i?

Ah just pondering where to go from the E46. Need 4 doors, so I've had a look at the 3 and 5 series offerings. Not many 325i's about. There's a few on done deal that have been hopping around back yard dealers for years. I'll start a "what's Alan going to buy next" thread at some point. Not necessarily stuck looking at BMW's either, I've been looking at all sorts. Focus st, GTI and trying to think of some not so mainstream motors too...

The arse has fallen out of Mk5 GTIs lately

I may have one for sale next week..

You see the decent spec e46 6 pots for sale on various enthuasiast sites without listings on dd. Always thought an e46 323i touring woild be a lovely motor. They look for strong money if its been minded like your own one and has low mileage good spec and the like.
