I'm looking for a car for max 3000e , up to a 1.4 petrol or diesel. I am in my early 30's with a full licence 10+ years but no NCB so quite restricted when it comes to insurancing the car. I will be commuting about 140km a day for work soon so need something cheap to run and reliable. I was looking at some diesels but are a lot more expensive to insure, just wondering will I save on fuel in the long run?

    Any recommendations?

A diesel corolla is hard to beat. Loads in your price range so no need to be picky.

    ^^ Ah just my thoughts! Here's a 09 with 1 years test asking €2,850

A bit surprised that diesels are coming in more expensive for insurance quotes unless you are getting quotes for larger capacity engines. I would have thought that a quote on a 1.4 diesel Corolla would be very similar for a 1.4 petrol of the same year and all other things being equal. Then again I have learned over the past few years in particular that motor insurance seems to be nuts the way it works.

The year of the car may be a particularly big issue for you with no NCB as some providers will not quote you on a car over 10 years old and they may well be the providers that provide you with the most competitive quote on a car less than 10 years old if you know what I mean. If you could add a wee bit to that budget it would mean that you would be looking at a lot more car 2009 upwards which means the 10 year rule shouldn't be an issue.
