According to the New York Times, Facebook intends to consolidate its messaging services, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

This means that a WhatsApp user could start a chat with an Instagram user removing the communication barriers of Facebook’s three social platforms.

Name that Ap > “WhataMess” ?

BBC TV news had this two days ago. Personally, it doesn't have any impact on me and I could never understand why they kept three platforms.

I'm not keen on this. I don't use instagram and I rarely if ever use facebook, I just keep the messenger to stay in touch with some friends. I prefer having my anonymity on whatsapp and I don't want that compromised.

Don't use Instagram , Snapchat , FB , messenger , whatever . Use Whatsapp , am sure I'm not the only one who doesn't use all mentioned in the OP .

I expect Viber will see a resurgence in popularity. Lots of Whatsapp only users won't be keen on this.

Don't think it will actually change anything other than confirm what was already happening. Ifou think Facebook weren't already collecting your WhatsApp data including your messages and preparing to sell it to advertisers then you clearly don't understand the nature of that company.

Don't post anything on the internet, especially free ones, unless you want some intern in the providers data center looking at your sexts.

Same. I only use WhatsApp, don't have Facebook or any of the other stuff. I wonder how it will affect us, if at all.

I use all of those and Viber

Viber was a terror for spam, though..

The only one of the sites listed I ever use is Facebook, and that was solely for Tinder and to maintain a club facebook page. I've no friends and no info on it, other than the few (now outdated) necessary photos.
I'm not going to complain about companies having access to the data, I understand that's going on, but will my whatsapp contacts now be able to message me on Facebook without even being added?

I use WhatsApp haven’t had a Facebook in 7 years, No insta or Viber. I use WhatsApp for everything I don’t send normal sms anymore.

Not sure why this is even worthy of a news article.

They are just consolidating the backend and will have a single graphql end point for the different clients to consume. A lot less overhead for Facebook and will result in a faster roll out of features.

Anonymity ??? Do they not have your phone number. And all the other phone numbers in your phone. And all the phone numbers of everyone and who they share as common contacts. And what facebook account links to what Whatsapp account. They already know more about you than you do yourself.

Oh I'm sure they have all the info, but what I'm talking about is the fact that I don't have anonymity on facebook but I do on whatsapp, it's about other users, not about what the companies do with my data.

I stopped using Whatsapp. I am currently using Telegram & so far so good. There are a lot of encrypted chat apps out there & they are getting more popular.

I like telegram but not one person I know uses it so no that's not much use

I don't think anything's going to change from a WhatsApp users view, just that they'll be able to message people that have Facebook/Instagram that don't have WhatsApp using it. They're not actually going to merge into the one app, not yet anyway.
