    Yep :D

I think the next big jump in safety in cars will be voice commands for everything. It will mean you won't have to take your eyes off the road if you want to change heat settings, skip tracks on stereos etc.

You kind of have that already with android auto. I can ask spotify to play stuff I want.

As for touch screens, I kind of agree. Touch screen can be really dangerous. I can only imagine how annoying Tesla can be. And by the looks of it, we will have 55inch touch screen TVs instead of interiors in the near future. :pac:

Just like the Mercedes A Class?

I know you can it with Android Auto and those additional systems but I'm talking about everything you press a button/turn a knob for will eventually be voice controlled.

I spotted this outside the local dealers earlier. Impressive looking machine from the front at least. The huuuuge gaping chrome grills would look better with black grills I think!

However I think the rear end styling is a mess. All weird awkward lines and those god awful square pipes with the round pipes clearly visible inside them. Terrible!

    Rear end.

Apologies for crap sideways photos. Not easy to upload photos to this site.

Hear you on the back, it’s a bit clunky looking. 6 series style boot lines would’ve worked better but they probably didn’t want it to look like the 6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,918 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

    Jesus that's shocking.
I agree re the black grill.
The rear is a bit too much Hyundai for me.

The constantly exposed camera is awful looking on the back

Quinns had two of them when i was up there during the week. One that colour and a black one. Looks well from the front, not so much from the rear.

I'd rather the new m4 they have, beautiful machine.

Is there a reason manufacturers can't finish the exhaust as the square pipe detracts from the look, some of the mercs have a gap there looks even worse.

There is a black 191 8 Series down here in Limerick, I've seen it twice now in the last week or so in the Raheen Business Park. Looks way nicer in black imo but still an imposing car up close.

Not sure about Barcelona blue but definitely black grilles are the way to go.

New A6 for those of you interested :).........

I watched this last night, very decent review of a seemingly very decent car :)

    Mark,
Do you feel that Irish car reviewers are overly polite and slow to criticize?
I find Irish reviews in general to stay on the right side of saying anything downright bad about a car.
For instance, you and a few other reviewers had the Mazda 6 lately and not one said about the well known problems Mazda have had with the Diesel engine in the car. I’m not criticizing you but just curious as to the relationship between reviewers and manufacturers. If you can’t get hold of a car you have no content.
I’m assuming the distributor sees the reviews and there may be a fear that access will be denied in the future if the car is slated?
Mat Watson on car wow which I highly rate will alway give things he likes and things he dislikes and at the end say if you should buy one, shortlist it, consider it or avoid it.
In fairness I’ve never seen him say avoid but you know consider is no great recommendation.
I’m curious as to how you have found the world of getting access to metal to have been?

    Interesting question.
I'm sure if I was starting off, I'd avoid being too controversial until very well established.

Yeah I was looking at his review of the new Pug 508 over the weekend... while he liked a lot about it (especially the looks / coupe styling), he was generally fairly critical and in the end, he put it into the "consider it" category... which really means - consider something else instead.

I think you'd need to be really well established with a powerful media house behind you (or 2 million followers like Schmee!) before you could be slating something. The classic example is Clarkson's review of the Vauxhall (Opel) Astra / Vectra... where he refused to even drive it.

That said, is it fair to slate any modern car? Are there any really truly terrible cars out there? Most cars are probably at least "average".

That Clarkson review was hilarious but that’s Clarkson. Mat is also extremely powerful in the motoring world. Different beasts!

I’ve had a few people tell me they’ve bought a particular car after watching a review which is nice but I’m a lot less significant. I’ve also done around 20 vids so in that list, there’s not a huge amount of badness.

The Mazda I had was the petrol so I didn’t get into the diesel issues, I know others did.

As someone else who reviews told me though, getting banned by a brand would be great for notoriety. ;)

I’ve a Dacia Duster vid next where I was able to show the fabric comes away from the seat bench in the back easily but it’s also good to point out that a top of the range one is €22,000 with things like blind spot so you make someone aware of the trade off and they can make up their own mind.

I don’t think brands dislike fair criticism at all, people will pull you up on the comments on YouTube if you miss a glaringly obvious thing anyway.

If you never point out negatives people won’t be able to trust you either.

I’m going to have to do more chasing this year, I was flat out for the 6 months of 2018, I’m only busy til Feb and then April to June at the moment but I seem to be on mailing lists for brands that I haven’t even reached yet. One or two of the premium ones don’t reply to requests and then somewhere like Audi are happy to oblige so it’s a weird one.

It’s never going to replace my income so it’ll be a hobby, that bit is for sure. That said I’ve had 100,000 views to the channel, if any of you want to sponsor it ;)

Could really do with an Irish look at BMW.

Do what James May did. Rover refused to give Top Gear any more cars to review for fear of negative criticism. Where are Rover now?!

Could really do with an Irish look at BMW.

    Should’ve done my 640 before I sold it :)

I was actually thinking of doing one of their 24 hour test drives and doing one that way!!

Do BMW Ireland not give out cars easily?
I’ve seen cars Ireland with them?
    The latest x4 recently.
Bob flavin always seems to be in a vw/ Audi product. They must have a large fleet.

Audi VW are fine not sure how BMW works.

Do you miss the 640d at all these days?

Between repayments, fuel, insurance etc I’m up close on €1,000 per month. It’s hard to see past that. I do miss having something nice but as much as I like the new 5 I’m just a bit ‘meh’ with BMW at the moment, the new 3 looks interesting but between low trade in offers and the allure of the U.K., it’s hard to feel confident walking into a dealer here to buy one especially knowing the same car is probably €10,000 cheaper across the Irish Sea.

A MK8 GTI will be something that I’ll be curious about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I went for a mk7.5 GTi to replace the 530d, hopefully trade it for a mk8 or could be back in the 530d before it's sold depending on how my fuel bill is looking over the next few weeks.
With the whole wltp thing and higher tax on 2019 GTi couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on a new one but I was very very close.
A hybrid mk8 would be an interesting prospect.

If you ever meet dave humphries or bob flavin at a test drive event Mark ask them about Mercedes Ireland attitude to "bloggers" as they call them or anyone who isnt traditional press for that matter. I think Bob took over 2 years to get a car from them - same with Dave. Fairly 20th century view of media over in MDL.

I got the waiting list response from Mercedes alright. If there’s an opinion that there isn’t room for a piece in the Sun Bus Post (just an example) AND video content then it’s a bit mad in this day and age. My background is media anyway so I’m super aware of how important video is to brands these days, one or two car brands don’t seem to be there yet though! Bob has over 32,000 subs like so I’d argue he has just as much influence as traditional.

BMW “First” have a M2, 440i and x3 m40i that people in the scheme can now hire for a fee.
Maybe you could get your hands on one of those from them if they’re not being used?

With regard to your interest in golf gti mark8, I will keep an eye out too but judging by the way golf prices have gone in the last couple of years, I bet it will be a 50 grand car by the time you add some spec and then it’s too dear for what it is.
I know I’m getting old( late 40’s) but looking at the retail price of new cars and the depreciation they currently suffer it is no surprise to see the market suffer as it does. Incomes in the last ten years have not increased at the same rate.
