Anyone else having bother with scam calls. Three so far this week. First about a virus in my lap top from an Indian lady.second from supposedly revenue from an Indian man with hardly any English and today from Eir an automated female voice that you could hardly understand. All looking for one thing bank details. Why can't these be traced or stopped.

I got an automated female voice yesterday. I thought in my case it said Enet rather then eir.

The "speel" was that they had been trying to contact me a few times and that the internet would be disconnected in 24 hours if issue not resolved.

I was invited to press 1 to talk to a technician. I pressed the hang up button instead by hanging up the phone.

Got a text today from Bridge United telling me that training for U 10s is starting again next week. It was from the committee and informing me of the new training team. Is this another type of scam?

The last princes that I know of down there were killed in 1014 AD.

I'm in west Cork. No connections with Clare. No kids under 10 or otherwise. 086 number but didn't reply as no point. Quite possibly a genuine mistake. Then again could be some type of con to get me to reply.
I've been getting a text approx every 6 months for last few yrs from somebody and the text is following the same format. It's usually making arrangements for some meeting or social event and how someone will be late and to change times or some sh1te. They know my name but it's always spelt wrong. I never reply as I'm certain it's some type of scam.

It's nice that Clare people are finally acknowledging that they are part of limerick.

I had a few recently. One from Mauritania and one from Madagascar. Still waiting to hear from Mozambique...

Some Indian crowd keep calling my dad's house phone informing him of a virus on his computer. My dad can barely operate his sky remote, let alone turn on a computer. Hates all technology. He keeps this crowd on the phone, taking the piss out of them until they get bored (and for some reason, he talks to foreigners in his impression of their accent).

7.30 this morning had a call from revenue informing me of money that I'm owed. Really great to see the effort being put into giving people the money that they are owed.

One very clever one I came across while working in a bank is the scammer calling you on a land line. They then say they are calling from the fraud department of a bank, generally AIB or BOI in Ireland, they don't look for any details at all. They just state that they are calling from the fraud department of the bank, there has been quite a few suspicious looking transactions made on your card that are pending and could you ring the number on the back of your card asap to get through to card services to verify if you had made them. They then thank you and say goodbye.

They hope that you will hang up straight away, then use the same landline to call the number on the back of the card, however, they have not hung up, so when you pick up and dial in the number, they are still on the line. They then switch person, and say "Hello, AIB card services, how can i help you." You say you got a call from the fraud team and can they check. "Certainly, we just need to go through security", which you think is fine as you've rang the number on the card. Name, address, DOB, card number, expiry date, and finally the last three numbers on the back of your card.

Just checking your account there and it looks like there were 3 transactions in Bali yesterday and this morning, was that you? No, ok, i've cancelled those transactions and i'll cancel your card for you, you'll get a new one in the next few days. Thank you and have a nice day.

This one could catch a load of people out. I would never have thought twice about ringing the number until you said it. I’d would have thought that phones automatically disconnect though, once at least one side has hung up.

Few months ago I was inundated with calls from UK numbers. I grew up in London so didn’t think twice about returning a missed call and took a few calls before it clicked that it was a scam.

Do you get a charge for answering the call or is if when you ring them back that you get charged?

Ringing the number back and it’s probably registered as a premium rate number

I had 2 calls today one after the other. I called it back but only got put on hold so not sure what it was about. Bit worried it might have been a scam now. No was 00355673283052

I usually just tell them all is good with my double glazing but that i probably will upgrade to triple glaze in the future, but that the job they did on the windows was great and i recommended them to others.

on another occasion i changed it to the virus obviously got there because i was watching some very weird porn that used elephants as the subjects.
this call went on for 30 or so minutes, your man was having a laugh with me and in the end he said, I enjoyed that call and have a Happy Christmas.

I've had THREE calls in the last 24 hours from Emily the automated "from eir to tell me my Internet connection has been compromised and they will disconnect in 24 hours".

    I just hang up.

But the 3 calls in 24 hours I thought was noteworthy.

That exploits a "feature" of the OpenEir landline network, where the called party can't hang up on an incoming call. It was supposed to allow you to hang up and change to s different extension but it's a ridiculous feature that allows for scams like this as well as an ability to block someone's line or harass them.

Eir should really get rid of it. I'm sure it's probably just a software setting on the switch.
