Hello, renting a house with an open fire but finding it hard to heat the living room. It's open plan with a stairs so a lot of heat escaping up. Fan is for circulating excess hot air around a room.

Hang a trendy blanket over the stairs. You have to stop the heat escaping.

That won't work at all with an open fire. It is designed to sit on top of a stove and circulate the heat.
