new gaming build 500-600

Hi guys,

Looking to build a new computer for college/gaming. doing a lot of coding atm, java, c++, nodejs with some mongoDB use. casual gamer - league of legends, wow etc. Budget is under 600euro, lower the better

I would like to reuse as many parts as possible from my old build (built in 2012) but I might only get away with the case and PSU:

8 gigs of ram
as rock z68 pro3 gen3
xfx pro 650w
i5 2500k
Fractal Design R3 case
1gb HD

samsung 24" sncmaster - is there a huge gap in picture quality between this and newer monitors? or could i get away with using this for a few months

TBH the 2500K is fine for the above-mentioned games - I'm surprised you don't have a GPU listed for WoW (though it'd be the one part to upgrade ASAP).

I would, however, chuck the PSU for a modern unit with warranty.
Also, get a decent SSD & do a fresh install of Windows 10 64-bit.
Finally I've thrown in a smaller, lighter case in case you want to transport the rig.

Regarding your screen, hard to know what model it is - SyncMaster is a product line, not a model identifier.

Thanks for the reply mate. I have been away for the last few years so the computer hasn't been used at all. Before I went I gave the gpu to my cousin and I have now promised the i5 to my brother, so I think I will need a full new build if I shouldn't use the psu. Should I wait a week until them new gpus come out? Or maybe it won't matter at my price point

I have been looking at some of your other builds, maybe a 570 build might be in my budget?

Just looking at the benchmarks for the gtx 1060, looks like a really nice card. What cpu should I put with it?

A full build including Ryzen 1600, 8GB DDR4 3000mhz, B350/B450M motherboard, 240GB SSD + RX570 should be doable on your budget.

Although for your described uses you don't really need any of it, just an RX570, another 8GB of DDR3, an SSD + a monitor upgrade would be easily doable on 600 either. You could also get an i7-3770 and drop it in for about €90 2nd hand, big improvement on the 2500K.

The only difference between normal and the k is the ability to overclock?

Yes, at stock the 3770 is much better for newer games than an overclocked 2500K due to the extra threads, but for the sake of a €10 I'd get the K for sure and give it a nice overclock.

With RAM, make sure it's in dual channel, eg not in random single or mixed size sticks, so 2x8GB, or 4X4GB, etc.

Cheers bud, I already have 2x4gb in the pc so I'll need another 2. It doesn't mention in them links if they are 2x4gb or 4x2gb

CEX sell based on stick size, so if it's listed as 8GB, it'll be a single stick.

Best to get 2x4GB in whatever speed matches your own ram. Doesn't matter if its faster, just make sure its not slower. If your ram is 1333mhz or 1066mhz, consider getting either 2x4GB 1600Mhz to replace, or 2x8GB. Ram speed makes a difference too, and with overclocking you should be able to run 1866mhz on that board or beyond. But 1600mhz 8/16GB is an OK aim.

Typically ram speed above 1600mhz only makes a difference when talking about monitors capable of running >60hz, DDR3 1600mhz is still plenty for now with an i7 on a normal display.

have everything in the computer except the GPU, which i will have next week. i'll be using the integrated graphics until then. just did a clean install of windows 10 but now i can't get the resolution back to 1920x1080 like i had it on windows 7. max it will allow is 1280x1024. anyone know why?

Hmm, weird. It should support up to 1920x1200 @ 60Hz using DVI.

Try running DDU and then install the latest drivers.
