Storing Bikes in the Office

Hi All,

Looking for ideas on this.

The office manager has agreed to allow bikes to be stored inside the office building (following a spate of thefts in 2018).

We have 2 areas available - under staircases, each about 1 metre wide.

Does anyone have any clever ideas, or existing solutions?

I was thinking of just getting the standard floor rack accommodate 4 bikes.

Any ideas or pictures would be great.

Probably not suitable for under the stairs though.

When maintenance were putting them up, they put double sided sticky tape on the bottom pad (for resting the back wheel on) and it keeps falling off.

They shouldn't be stored in an office/ under stairs etc

May impede exit / injure fire crew if the place is on fire

( cos can't guarantee bikes will be stowed properly )

Alas as said above, the stairwell, while convenient, is not the place for bikes from a fire safety point of view as I found out from our Safety Officer. I found a closet that I throw mine into that was not in use or when people are not in my office, I leave it in the office but anything close to an access/egress point, corridor, a fire exit or a stairwell is a big no no.

They definitely will not be blocking any exits.

The area is well out of the way of the escape routes.

The top part of it is fixed at roughly five foot ten from the floor (from the top point of it). It's easy enough to lift the front wheel up onto it.

If you're getting someone to put them in, make sure they drill in the bottom part of it too.

If your place was anything like mine you would still want to be locking them up properly. Any randomer could easily blag their way into my workplace.

Just a heads up – While they may be out of the way, if it's a fire-rated staircase all materials within it must be fire rated (to class 0 I think) and therefore should not be used for storage. I know bikes aren't exactly combustible, but tires/jackets/etc would be deemed a risk by a fire safety officer.

Any chance you could send me the Regulation on that?

My understanding is that the requirement for prohibiting the presence of potentially combustible materials applies in the construction of of the escape and as per the criteria listed in Section 1.4.4.1 of Technical Guidance Document (Part

of the Building Regulations 2006.

As bicycles are not a potential source of fire, and they are not being "incorporated" into the protected stairway they would not be prohibited as per section 1.3.6.5 of Part B.

That said, we will need to consider risk assessing E bikes due to potential battery fire hazard.

Unless the bike can catch fire, I'd say we are onside regarding the Regulations.

B&Q sell hooks for hanging bicycles at a fraction of the cost of those CRC ones. I've 5 of them in my garage.

Same, Halfords do a 2-pack for about a fiver, and they’re sheathed in plastic to protect the wheels.

If the Halfords/B&Q type hooks don't suit (unsuitable wall material/thickness), then have a look at these - might be cheaper then the Cycloc version, because there's no pad for the rear tyre.

i have those, and the plastic hook covering seems to be splitting. they've been up about 6 months at most.

Heavy duty duct tape over the plastic seems to help them last longer.

As i said earlier, the pad for the rear wheel keeps falling off the wall (because our crowd only used adhesive to attach it to the wall).

I've substituted it altogether with a sheet of cardboard. It is actually better than what was there, it covers more surface area of the wall. Looks crap, but where we store the bikes, aesthetic isn't a big thing, but i don't want to make a sh1te of the wall at the same time.

Another option (for several bikes) is to use a length of shelving wood (15cms wide) with the with wipe-able coating.

You could wrap tube around the hooks and duct tape then, the rubber would be kinder to fancy rims than just the plastic.

Also from a safety perspective, think about how to collect the pools of water under the wheels on those wet mornings.

I'm always amazed at the amount of water a frame collects during a wet ride. Where does it enter - the top of the seat post?
