They are .. and will always be .. the ultimate driving machine.

I have yet to find something, that can match my E39 M5 in handling and comfort and noise.

Perfect sleeper until you open the taps and then hell breaks loose. But you still don't get stressed ... even at 280+ (can't do 300 anymore .. i replaced the rear-diff gearing ratio for more bottom end torque).

And I've done 2 Scally Rally's and a few other road trips in an E38 740i .. and yes .. you can even drift that ... auto-box in sport mode down on Inch beach and just put the boot down. Lots of fun.

    /M

    Leather seats.

Thanks AD, I've never seen or heard that used before.

Is it a Motors thread thing like "ditchfinders", "chape tax" and "daysul"?

That's very strong money for that car IMO. Does look clean however.

Just NCTd and a year from cheap tax.............. looks potentially decent value to me tbh if the NCT tester had a decent look around for structural corrosion.

Yeah think I'm off the mark on this one considering Old Diesel's comments above!

Open to correction but pretty sure I have heard "cow" used to mean leather outside of boards motors forum before.

Luxobarges should be looking for 'calf' not 'cow'!

'Cow' is for the midbarges like Jag X types, etc. or BMW 530Ds.

Maybe I'm picking you up wrong but a 5 series is better built with better materials then alot of stuff posted on here.

FWIW BMW advertise a lot of their upper level cars in Germany as having 'Buffalo Leather' (or Bison as we know it). It's always from the male as females get stretch marks when in calf.

Rolls and Bentley oddly enough take their leather from Alpine cattle, again always from the male due to stretch marks, but as Alpine pastures have almost no barbed wire or thorny ditches it is preferred as there is less chance of the leather being from an animal with scars.

    Heated steering wheel too.

Its incredibly difficult to find a CLS with even half decent spec on these shores. That one looks very nice. I wonder if it has the old non CGI engine though

The red warning in the centre console would be a worry.
Could be something as simple as brake pads or something as horrible and expansive as the SBS pump.

Bottom of the barrel barging here, but worth a mention

4 months test, taxed through to the new year, very good spec, €2k

Rare to see an E65 this old that isn't on its 10/12/15th owner too, a good sign IMO.

Early E65 sounds warning bells, but I suppose if it's still on the road and "everything works" is true then it can't be too bad.

E65 are starting to grow on me, I remember hating them as they were a huge step down from the e38.

...and yet in reality they are a colossal step up. It's actually hard to think of a model change of pretty much any car when the following model was so radically different in terms of looks, interior design, transmissions and engines, options, technical prowess and engineering. I still love the E38, no question. But having owned both for over 10 years, I wouldn't even class them in the same segment they're that different. The E38 is a bit more driver focused, less refined, lower, stiffer, handles a bit better. The E65 feels waftier, more opulent, powerful and elegant with more presence; its like stepping back in time sitting back in an E38, each car from a different millennium. Depends what you want for your money.

Worth buying and enjoying for the tax alone. Unreal looking car the e65 is

I checked and Autoline will cover that 735 on a classic policy for €360

    Someone buy it!

Sorry, maybe I should have been a bit clearer on what I meant by a step down.
I meant, I preferred the looks of the e38 to the e65.
    And I still do.
But the e65 is growing on me, and if I had the space I'd love a nice one to have on a "classic" policy.
    I'd still prefer an e38 750i though!

I remember watching a documentary on Bentley where they said the reason for using alpine cattle was that there are no mosquitoes above a certain altitude, so no bite marks on the hide.

Interesting, never heard of them, presume this is them...

    https://www.autoline.co.uk/car/classic-vehicle/

Is it 15 years for them to classify it as a classic? Can it be your main car or does it have to be a 2nd car, any mileage restrictions?

They will insure certain cars at 15 years old; BMW, Audi, Merc mostly. You need a main policy, and mileage limits can be negotiated.
