Appeal of the Sega Mega Drive?

I'm going way back to the early and mid-90s here. The first computer console I ever owned was the Super Nintendo...got it for my Christmas present in 1992.

And even though my console of choice and use today is the Xbox One X..... I still have a soft spot for the SNES.

I got the mini-SNES last year and Ive been playing it ever since...... particularly Super Ghouls N'Ghosts, Super Metroid, Street Fighter and Zelda.... whenever I get sick of modern flashy gaming.

But seriously, whatever was the appeal for some people with the Sega Mega Drive? I had an uncle close to my age and some friends back in the 1990s who had this system.

Not only did I dislike it back then......but even now I don't like the system or its games. I couldn't even be bothered to buy the €20 sale price Sega Mega Collection for Xbox One.

It feels like paying €20 just to play Sonic....which I do like, but it feels like the only good thing the Sega Mega Drive had going for it.

I love my Xbox and SNES... including some other consoles.....but I could just never warm to the Sega Mega Drive. No offense to Sega fans...but it always seemed boring to me and not worth the time.

I'd happily fork out €100 for a mini-SNES....but would struggle to get myself to buy even a €20 Sega collection for the Xbox One

It was a brilliant console, better than any nentendo by miles. Sonic was one of the best games ever on any console.

Sega Mega Drive was awesome. I will forever treasure the countless hours playing Sonic and Knuckles, Street Fighter 2 and Senna Grand Prix when I was 8

Blood and gore on Mortal Kombat, albeit with a cheat. Great laugh on the SMD.

Actually like the first two games, not familiar with the third.

Used to be interesting back in the early 90s acing Ken and Ryu on the SNES....but feeling like having to learn a new game when playing in friends houses that had the SMD.... could never get the hang of the controller.

Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi are three great games for the Sega but do prefer the SNES myself.

Im not sure about Senna GP it could have been on Nintento 64

As a brand Sega seemed just that little bit more dangerous than Nintendo. And even though PlayStation was originally a Nintendo - Sony project, it is really the spiritual descendant of the Mega Drive.

I never thought about that but you're right the original playstation was definitely a progression on the megadrive, even in appearance. But the Megadrive 2 was a beautiful machine in itself

Everyone has an attachment to the one they grew up with. I had a mega drive so prefer that. If I'd owned a snes I'd now prefer that. As regards games that haven't been mentioned ;

Micro machines
Golden axe
Dungeons and dragons
Mega lo mania
Eswat
Premier manager
Dune
Lemmings
Flicky
Micky and Donald's world of illusion
Sunset riders
Road rage
Mercs

Loads more too if I could remember them.

It's gas though - I loved computer games as a kid. Haven't owned a console since going to college though.

The sound was always atrocious on the mega drive which meant it was awful to use after a SNES. There was a bit of thought behind Mario games too which Sega never had.

They had the blood on Mortal Kombat though.

I still have my SNES and games such as Mario Kart, Mario all stars and donkey Kong country.

We had a mega drive in the house too. I loved sonic, mortal Kombat and road rash, great games.

But the sega had no rainbow road or bowsers castle (world 8,iirc)

Same. Used to do nothing except play games since I got my first C64 but the PS was the end for me really (Nothing will ever beat the N64 for me in my life of gaming). Everything became either first person online or constant buying of cards.
Bought an XBox One S this year as it was cheap and I've turned it on about 6 times.

Has anyone mentioned gun star heroes and thunder force 4, both fantastic games, also With the likes of golden axe, streets of rage, micro machines, sonic, shinobi, desert strike, Aladdin, mortal kombat.

The sega for me easily matched the enjoyability factor of the snes. Love games from both consoles tho and Still play a lot of these games to this day. The snes classic was a great release, especially if you can hack it and add a bunch more.

We had both in our house growing up, they were both good machines in their own ways.

Megadrive had such classics as Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Sonic and one of my own persoanal favourites - Populous, but as already mentioned , the sound from it never compared with a SNES.

The SNES had some genius games too mind you, Mario World was a classic, as was Mario Kart , and we had hours upon hours of fun with super tennis, and my favourite for the SNES was pilot wings.

The stereo audio, and mode 7 meant the SNES takes it for me overall though.
