The first time I ever saw "The Shining" was around Christmas 1992. For that reason alone I associate it with the festive season. Probably watch it over the weekend.

Like the way you snuck Uncle Buck into that list thinking we'd never notice it.

Some version of a Christmas carol and maybe it’s a wonderful life.

Die hard and home alone are not Christmas movies.

The greatest Christmas film ever is Gremlins.

The best definition of a Christmas movie to me is one that couldn’t work if Christmas was taken out. Die Hard obviously would. Home alone probably would.

Any version of a Christmas carol wouldn’t. Elf wouldn’t. Miracle on 34th street wouldn’t. And many more.

Another good criteria is whether it seems off to watch it in July. I could watch Die Hard anytime of the year, as an action movie. It’s a wonderful life, elf, A Christmas carol etc. I can’t watch out of season.

    Edit:

Of course this thread is about favourite movies rather than what’s an official Christmas movie so whatever appeals.

I couldn't watch It's a Wonderful Life any time of year. It's just for RTE Guide film reviewers.

No Christmas is complete without The Deerhunter. Best way to get 5 hours kip.

"Flight of the Navigator "always reminds me of Christmas Day after the feed when I was young. Still a class film

    It’s a beautifully shot film.

I feel sorry for anyone who can’t appreciate it.

There is actually a bit of depth to Its a wonderful life. Its not for everyone

That's more like it. Pretentious and condescending as ****, never let Christmas take the boards out of boards.

Its not condescending. Some people like friends and the big bang theory and US sitcoms. They aint for me as they are boring and formulaic. Give me its a wonderful life over any of that trash.

That's why you're better than us.

I watched that for the first time last year, don't know what took me so long. First time in ages I laughed out loud at a film. Brilliant

Planning on watching it's a wonderful Life for the first time this year. Better be as good as everyone says

    There is only one.

    Greatest cast.

    Greatest score.

    Greatest film.

Every dad should sit his sons down at Christmas and tell them, "that's Steve McQueen"

    .

These are my favourite Christmas movies, plus The Grinch.
Willy Wonka (the one with Gene Wilder with whom I fell madly in love as a teenager  ) for old times sake, at a push.
