One of the funniest camera pan shots. Focuses on the picture of the pope. Camera pans up to a picture of Elvis. Brilliant. :D

I don't get the criticism that he didn't write his own songs, didn't compose. He was a singer, a performer.

It's like saying Marlon Brando was an over-rated actor because he didn't write the screenplay for any of his films.

nope. he was a really talented singer and performer.

Over a billion records sold and a lot of those when it was a lot harder to reach your audience than now where an artists music is available with the click of a mouse
Been dead 41 years and still drawing audiences (68 Comeback TV Special sold out cinemas across UK and Ireland this year)
Elvis in Concert still selling out(Elvis on huge screen, original band plays along)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra CD's topping the charts
Over 600,000 people visit Graceland every year
There's probably a few other facts as well I have forgotten
What other artist will even come close to this 41 years after their death?
Hope that's answered the original question OP

I thought he was, and is still, very good.

He had a very very good voice.
He recorded music of nearly every genre.
He had charisma like nobody else.
He was generous beyond his means.
He gave lots of money to lots of charities, as does his legacy still.
He served his country like a good boy.
    He was a bit nuts.
He made a lot of people happy, and still does.

    I rate him quite highly.

His voice was and still is unmistakable and his delivery made most of the tunes he done his forever. So what if he didn't write his own songs............i'm sure the lads who wrote the tunes never imagined them done the way he did them
    either !!.

His looks and way he moved probably played a big role in his popularity with younger fans no doubt (guys wanted to be him, girls wanted to be with him).

An incredibly talented performer no question about that.

I'd hazard a guess that most posters on this thread that are saying yes he was underrated are basing that opinion on the same 20 recordings that do the rounds on radio/TV
He recorded in excess of 400 songs(OK some of them second rate movie songs) but we only hear about 1% of them on radio.
    You will never hear
    Long Black Limousine
    Wearing that loved on look
    Hurt
    Baby Lets play House
    High Heeled Sneakers
Tomorrow is Such a long time(Bob Dylan said the biggest thrill of his life was when he heard Elvis had recorded one of his songs)
    Stranger in my own hometown
and countless other high quality recordings that most on here have never even heard before making judgement
    All we hear is
    All Shook up
    Jailhouse Rock
    Always on My Mind

BTW Elvis vocal ranged from Falsetto to Bass effortlessly

    End thread ;0)

    Totally agree with Steve F.
I have been listening to and buying Elvis records / CDs since the late 80s.

Brilliant back catalogue - most people don't get past a compilation.
    Elvis Presley (1956)
    Elvis Is Back (1960)
    From Elvis In Memphis (1969)
    seriously great albums.

The 1970s is my favourite period - the box set Walk A Mile In My Shoes which covers that decade is amazing.
The Follow That Dream label have put out close on 150 archive releases - special editions of albums, live concerts etc.

Back in January 2010 I made an Elvis compilation called Dig Right In which covers off some of my favourite deep cuts.
    Tracklist
01 It Feels So Right (Elvis Is Back LP, 1960)
02 Do The Clam (Girl Happy OST LP, 1965)
    03 Little Sister (Single, 1961)
04 Fever (Elvis Is Back LP, 1960)
05 Let Yourself Go (Speedway OST LP, 1968)
06 Any Day Now (From Elvis In Memphis LP, 1969)
07 Only The Strong Survive (From Elvis In Memphis LP, 1969)
08 If You Talk In Your Sleep (Single, 1974)
    09 A Little Less Conversation (Single, 1968)
10 Clean Up Your Own Back Yard (Single, 1969)
11 Early Mornin' Rain (Elvis Now LP, 1972)
12 If You Don't Come Back (Raised On Rock LP, 1973)
    13 Rubberneckin' (B-Side, 1969)
14 Just A Little Bit (Raised On Rock LP, 1973)
15 We Can Make The Morning (Single, 1971)
16 Change Of Habit (Let's Be Friends LP, 1970)
17 Animal Instinct (Harum Scarum OST LP, 1965)
18 Bossa Nova Baby (Fun In Acapulco OST LP, 1963)
19 Crawfish (King Creole OST LP, 1958)
20 Blue Moon (Elvis Presley LP, 1956)
21 Wisdom Of The Ages (Harum Scarum OST LP, 1965)
22 Tomorrow Is A Long Time (Spinout OST LP, 1966)
23 Gonna Get Back Home Somehow (Pot Luck LP, 1962)
24 Patch It Up (Single, 1970)
25 I Got A Feelin' In My Body (Good Times LP, 1974)
26 Stranger In My Own Home Town (Back In Memphis LP, 1970)
27 Edge Of Reality (Single, 1969)

Must do a volume 2 someday.

06 Any Day Now (From Elvis In Memphis LP, 1969)

This particular track shows off his superb vocal prowess
Lets also remember all of Elvis' recordings were made on the crudest of equipment compared to todays technology
Auto tune was in the future when he was recording.....

    He was over indulgent.

"Return to sender" is my favourite song.

Granny used to sing it a lot when my mum was around....

His albums which used to fetch good money with vinyl collectors have been plummeting in price as his fan base dies off.

I wonder if this will happen with the likes of the Beatles and the Stones.

There's got to be at least 1 Elvis number that you like, no matter who you are. I wouldn't make that claim of any other artist.

He was the ultimate southern boy done good.

Overrated yes. Some really good songs but the likes of Freddy Mercury and Michael Jackson were a lot more talented.

It's a fact unfortunately. Nobody else is seeing that big a dip amongst vinyl collectors. Young people aren't buying his records. Stuff that was going for 150 pounds a few years ago is now going for 15.

Got a 2-hour lift from a colleague yesterday during which time I had the 'pleasure' of listening to 2 FM and the non-stop stream of auto-tuned sh;te that passes as music these days. Truly today's mainstream artists are not fit to lick the tassels off the King's cloak.

One other issue, I'd never actually heard her before but that fcuking Lottie Ryan and those other two no-marks that present with her would make you want to fcuking cry. Their whole schtick seemed to consist of one of them saying something inane while the other two bayed like hyenas - is this what people actually choose to listen to these days - Jesus!
