Would you be able to tell a close friend/colleague that their breath stinks?

It's gotten to the stage where when we meet as a group that I have to minimise contact with a friend because her foul-smelling breath is too much to take. Even the offer of chewing gums has done nothing to stifle the stench.

Probably someone who hasn’t had a professional teeth cleaning in years! Nothing will eliminate the stench until that person gets to the hygienist!!

I get a great kick out of telling people their breath stinks.

    1. Smoker breath and I don't mean the "just had a cigarette smell" but that stale smell from years of smoking
    2. Halitosis
    3. Aging man breath, as Family Guy said "men get to an age where its like they're rotting from the inside"

I have no stomach for any of them!

If it's that bad, she potentially has a serious underlying health problem.

Up to you what you do but I'd try and find a way of getting her to go to her doctor.

Easier said than done I know but personally I'd prefer to risk a non serious friendship if it means someone gets medical treatment they need.

It's incredibly difficult to tell anyone this, even if they are a sibling or lover! Almost the only person you can safely say this to is your child!!
But with close people I might say something like ''Do you have a bad tooth, or have you toothache?'' and look really sympathetic and quizzical, and they say ''No?! Why?'', and you say, ''Oh nothing, it's just I got a bit of that bad tooth smell. I remember it from when I had a bad tooth. Ah well. Probably nothing....'' :o

Hopefully that might drop the hint.

But the way to check for bad breath is to lick the back of your hand, a good oul proper lick now, no wimpy licks, and then wait for it to dry a bit and smell the back of your hand after half a minute or so. All this breathing into cupped hands tells you nada. Maybe this is a game you and your pal could play next time ye are having a bag of cans? :D

I told my Dad once and another time at a wedding he told me.

I popped up to the room and bust out the Colgate, had a half a lb of ham stuck in my teeth, days since I had ham and to be fair to myself I'd always give the teeth a fair scrubbing 2/3 three times a day.

In other news I told a girlfriend her vagina was a bit on the ripe side one time.

Turned out to be a tampon that done a disappearing act.

    Sibling? No problem.
    The wife? No problem.
    Friend? No problem

Person at work? That's the problem!

Post-it note left on her desk is the ideal way to get the message across.

I worked in a factory once, new boy started, smell of BO would knock you out, he started in the summer too when the place was roasting. You could smell him everywhere.

Anyways, the manager brought everyone in for a meeting and at the end, casually discussed personal hygiene. The smelly boy was laughing away, making a joke of it and came in the next day as bad as ever.

The moral of the story is smelly people probably dont realize how smelly they are, unless you tell them directly.

Is number 3 something that affects men only? Ive never heard of this.

some people are unfortunate enough to have this through no fault of their own - can be related to gastro issues

other people who have it just need to floss and clean their teeth / mouth properly.

i would, use to work with a guy in an office who stank to high heaven with BO...no one had the guts to tell him, so i did ..directly to his face i just couldn't hack it anymore...yes he took offensive, but quite frankly i didn't give a toss...cause in this day & age there is no excuse for smelling like a pig

I remember once I went to the cinema and there was a guy to the next of me and the ****ing STINK coming out of his mouth ... was ****ing disgusting ... It almost ruined the film for me, I was leaning so far into my other side ... thank christ that seat was empty.

But it was almost fecal in smell ... disgusting, and every so often he would yawn .... F*CK ... would knock a Bombay sewar worker out.
At the end of the film, his mates came up to him to ask what he thought of the film - they had sat rows in front of him !!! - you would think he would have gotten the hint.

And this was a young guy too.

Why didn’t you just move to the empty seat?

I know a few people eating high protein low carb diets with very bad breath. Seems to be a problem.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

Its really akward when somebody has horrible breath. One of my friends has such bad breath and she leans in very close to you when shes speaking and its nearly unbearable, and really distracts from what shes saying, but I dont want to say anything to her about it

I dont mind saying the odd time to somebody that their breath stinks if they ate something horrible and its a once off thing but if their breath always stinks its probably because of some oral condition and I dont want to say anything in case its unchangeable and really offends them.

Because there was a couple in the seat next to that one, I didn't want to sit right next to them, I think they were getting weirded out by me leaning over to the empty seat anyway ... :D

I have a few friends where they have a finger that smells like faeces from time to time.

They trust my sense of smell the best, and would ask me to smell their finger, so I would oblige and do that to help them out.

They always found it so funny for some reason.

    Tell them.
I had a boss tell me I had smelly breath once! Due to a tooth problem, infection,

If a boss can tell an employee anyone can!
