I doubt the name Michael Johnson gets mentioned much at the City training ground as a cautionary tale of what could happen when you don't make it in football. I can't see many young lads making it in the competitive first team environment at City right now so hopefully someone else will pay them a good wage.

Yes, that was surely the choice so why focus on the black player when you have another 20 year old who has done the same?
Cause skin color isn’t the only difference between the two of them. They went on the basis that at least Foden (a well know player) has played for City a number of times, isn’t out on loan, expected to have an England career, and is a PL level player.

I still don’t think they should knock a kid for spending the money that someone has decided to give him; but this feels like one of those cases where you’ve to go looking for racism rather there being racism.

I watch QI (tv show). When Stephen Fry left, they hired Sandi Toksvig, but paid her less. And the cry was it was due to her being a women.
Again, as if that was the only difference between the two of them.
To make that argument, you need to ignore that he hosted the show for about 15 years, was known for his roles in a number of hit tv comedy shows, has starred in movies (including Hollywood), and is a very well known celeb.
Sandi, while popular, has nowhere near the same standing, which tends to be a factor in paying someone.
None of that matters I guess if you only see one as a man and the other as a women.

I don’t exclude the possibility of a rag like the Mail/writer having a race based agenda; but it’s need to be far more evident before I just take Mason Holgate type yells of racism seriously.

The journalist that wrote the story on the player buying the £2m mansion has tried to defend himself on twitter by pointing out he doesn't write the headlines. The story was a follow up on millionaire teenage footballers program and it may be that they just coincidentally chose the player in question. But my questions on the article would be why are you focusing on a 20 year old and not a 19 year old? Surely teenager means someone not 20 yet so I am questioning why they chose this player to write their story on and not Phil Foden who did the same thing but did it as a 18 year old. The headline is also a lot more on the nose about how we should feel about it. In one case he is a good young boy looking after his mum, the other is splashing the cash and hasn't even played in the PL yet.

But you are correct that in this case there may be just a misunderstanding on the reporting and its nothing more than timing of the articles.

So I will present you with the following twitter thread about articles on Sterling and how they appeared in the newspapers.

    https://twitter.com/adamkeyworth/status/1001218545588502530

The argument you could make is that Wayne Rooney received just as much negative press and you will be right, but how do you explain a story about the expensive England shirts being made by people earning pennies in Bangladesh and the photo they use is of Sterling?

That is the definition of dog whistle racism, you may not see anything in it but for someone, that Chelsea supporter as an example, it would reinforce the negative image he has of Sterling with a negative story.

Any chance at starting a dedicated thread to all the Sterling stuff as it isn't Liverpool related.

Saw that picture on Reddit, Knex, it's a spectacular leap. Someone captioned it "My people need me, I have to go"
I'm not sure if it's just the camera angle but low flying aircraft and birds would need to be wary round Anfield.

@enzokk Can you seriously remove the link to that ****ing newspaper from your post? No-one wants to see it. You can make your point perfectly well without it.

Ah yeah. It's highly unlikely 70% of the general public see us winning it. Still most knowledgeable football fans and all.

Just think when Gomez hits the end of his new 5 year contract he will just be hitting his peak years as a pro.

That bit is true, they don't write the headlines.

I totally disagree, it doesn't meet any definition of racism. If they had Kane, it would be the same story. Just because they use Sterling, it doesn't equal racism. If a negative story is being ran, and if you have to think about having to judge the persons skin colour for the pic, then that is racism.

"That" Chelsea support would see a positive story on Sterling and turn it negative; people like that don't need any encouragement.

Anyway, miles off topic on here as others have said. And I feel like a need a shower for defending anything to do with the Mail.
