I fully understand that RTE needs to make money....and have no problems with online advertising through the RTE player....

But it seems so totally inappropriate to me that on our state news service that I am required to view ads for Tesco Christmas....it entirely detracts from the experience of reading serious news...

Compared with the BBC, this seems very amateurish

I'll say one thing about the RTE Player - the ads never fail to load. It's a pity the same can't be said for the programmes.

Worst thing I find is if you want to skip ahead to say the end of a 1 hour show you need to watch every single ad break to get there, joke of a system.

I gave up on RTÉ player a long long time ago.

It's just not worth the frustration.

Is that still the case with the new one? I rarely use it but it was always impossible to forward, say, 15 mins without going through the 'ads and loading' cycle again.

god im glad i dont watch rte. yes im the fool who pays the tv licence but only because i dont want to end up in court over 160 euro.
from what i remember rte is appalling. how anyone sits through anything on it puzzles me but then so do a lot of other things:)

I never got this whole thing about how people end up in court over not having a license for the tv.

A few years ago, while in our starter home, I remember a Friday afternoon the doorbell rang, and I answered it, to find an older gentleman, flashing his (iirc) An Post ID at me, telling me that the house wasn't registered as having a television license.

I replied that the database he was working of was spot on, and we did not indeed own a television license, as we did not own a tv.

He asked why there was a satellite dish that was clearly viewable bolted to the side or the building, and I told him that it was there before we moved in.

He then asked if he could come inside and verify what I was telling him, and l replied with a firm but polite no, and off he went.

How does it get to the point where people get brought to court

They can't come storming in checking for the tv, or can they?

They have no right to enter, but if they can see a TV through a window then you'll be caught/summonsed.

Only reason I've paid it.

I've just got the Virgin analogue service which went from 17 stations to 9 now, one of which is cartoons and the other TG4. I put on Sky news the odd time but mostly watch netfllix/youtube via chrome cast. Do pay the licence but seriously considering getting a PC 26/29 inch monitor to watch on and ditch tv and fee.

BTW the All4 app works here in Ireland.

There's nothing on RTE that makes want to watch.
If I start watching something however I quite often stick with it and find it enjoyable. A lot of their programmes are uniquely Irish.

RTE player is a load of sh*t. Last time I tried to watch a match on it, I got 10 mins in before realising it wasn't worth the rise in blood pressure. Absolute shame of a website.

Meanwhile, I can watch the Virgin channels no problem, Ch4 have a great service etc etc

I like RTE and don't believe people here when they say they don't watch it.

So nobody watches RTE news, or in the last year coverage of Irish things like the Abortion referendum or presidential election.

Over a million watched the Late Late Toy show but nobody here.

I couldn't stand just watching Sky for their British view of the world or coverage of Royal weddings and births.

RTE have some great stuff. Recent series about Irish Lighthouses was very interesting and well made. They have plenty of historical docs about Irish independence etc.

Recent programme about Irish nature was also very good.

Prime time often has good investigative journalism.

Programmes like Nationwide, after the news is just one of those shows I end up watching as it covers a lot of interesting things going on around the country.

Will agree about the player though, it's awful and I just tried the new one there and it still forces ads on you which is bad form.

It's the unintentionally funny programmes like Ireland's Fittest Family,the lad that renovates the houses or Daniel and Majella that can be entertaining.
The Six One is normally the only thing I'd ever watch though

No haven't watched anything on rte is years. And as I'm a grown man and don't have any kids have no reason to want to watch the toy show

I don't watch the Toy Show either, nor the Late Late as I would not be a fan of Tubridy but I really find it hard to believe that people never watch RTE for news or sport at some stage.

The million people who want to watch it can pay for it.

It is utterly obscene in an area that is perfectly well served by the market that anyone who wants a TV is forced to fund this organisation.
The government has absolutely no business in forcing this on people.

There might be some merit to funding, through general taxation, a website, a single news TV and a single news radio channel, as well as funding an independent media regulator/advisory board, but there's no justification for providing entertainment media.
Back in the 50's maybe there was some merit in it when it was difficult to get anything else, but such needs are now defunct.

If the government wants to dip its hand in your pocket it better be for a good reason. Treating a little girl's cancer is one such reason. Paying Ryan Tubridy's salary is not.

I never, ever watch RTE, or listen to it on the radio, or use any of its services, except the odd rugby match, which would be broadcast elsewhere if they didn't exist.

I saw 15 minutes of the referendum 'debates' when visiting family but after seeing how much of a gobshite circus it was, they changed the channel.

Before that I watched a film on RTE one and that was when my father was still alive, so a few years ago now.

It's a shambles of a service.

I get my news online and I don't follow sports.
Don't even get the free to air channels where I live, all my entertainment comes from online.

You like and watch it because you like it fair enough but a lot of people disagree.

Anyone incapable of believing of entertainment outside of RTE must be living under an old fashioned rock.

I did watch it for years, years ago. Anytime I'm visiting my family I check what's on it.
My friends have tried to use RTE player when things they are interested are on but I'm told it's a buggy mess.

English, american programmes or ones that aired years ago like Ear to the Ground.

Shows from other countries or old ones being repeated, what exactly are people paying for?

The much loved and lauded Finding Joy is it?
I read the viewers dropped off a cliff after the first few episodes.

Sports coverage is the only thing they do right but I've no interest in sports so why would I bother.

Has it changed much in the last six or seven years then.
Is it now a fountain of unbiased news or great and entertaining television?

I prefer text based news, I read it faster than someone else reading it out.

I don't have to call people old fashioned, you don't have to call people liars.
Which is what you did earlier, directed at anyone that says they don't watch RTE.

Ya. Rte should be cloned with eir..both useless not fit for purpose entities..eir cant provide adequate broadband yet their sales agents has us all believing that we can all get fibre..but most of these agents have never been outside dublin.. THEN rte has paid way over the pay scale to a hand full of presenters for far too long and are now left in a position where they haven't a pot to pi.. in. I never watch rte but unfortunately once you receive any signal from an outside broadcaster.. BBC etc you still are legally obliged to pay your TV license to your local broadcaster.. in my case I should be paying bbc..as I have free to air..and netflix..no sky cos there robbers

RTÉ have major problems and its not funding.

Think about this they have reduced funding to Children's Content by 75% while ring fencing 20million to imports, they spend just 1% on Children's Content and at the same time pay there top 10 stars just 1% of the income (a drop in the ocean), they have cut news from both RTÉ2 and 2FM suggesting it would improve news output over all, they reduce independent productions and drama by 50%, spending just 5 - 10 million on drama outside Fair City.

As one high up person in film said to me you'd wonder where their priorities are... IMO it is certainly not to there audience.

If there is a match on and I'm occupied that I can only watch it on my phone or computer, I would watch on an illegal stream as opposed to RTE. They are more reliable.

You do realise you can look at program listings without actually watching the program?
