The "hometown" gig

Does anyone think the "hometown" gig concept is dead in the water ?? Often band's play there hometown where u think something special will happen but in fact it turns out the same standard tour show It's cool seeing band's in the same city they started but it's the exact same as any other show on the tour

I think the hometown gig phenomenon is around an extra buzz from both the band and crowd.
