Has anyone noticed that an awful lot of people of all ages groups and social classes no longer or rarely use the word ‘those’......?

The demise of the word lot I think is far more worrisome.

'Before' has been removed from the vocabulary of everyone in RTE. It seems that now they can only say 'ahead of'. I think it started in the sports deparment but it has proved very contagious.

    Whatever happened to 'moment'?

It's not "at the minute", FFS, it's "at the moment".

Make the moment great gold again!

What about have? It has been replaced by of.

What has happened to the language across the board over the last few years has been an atrocity..

The word that boggles me is "yous".

It's actually shocking the volume of people who think this is an legitimate pronoun. These people are normally well spoken and have otherwise good syntax, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

I find myself lately sometimes to write 'Ya no' rather than 'ya know', I need to get out of that habit. :)

If you spell you wrong I think the best thing is to keep going and spell know wrong.
It shows some level of consistency.

recently a new and very annoying verbal tick has crept into nearly every conversation/interview you hear on the radio and the television.
the interviewer will ask a question and the interviewee will begin their reply with the word....so.
    Q. where are you from?
    A. So, i was born in Mayo.

    Q. why did you murder them all.
    A. so, they were annoying me a lot.

    its very very annoying.

On the plus side I think the misuse of the word literally is on the way out. That trend didn't last as long as I expected.

How terrible. A language that evolves and changes over time.

You are absolutely right. The rules created by some unknowns at some distant time should never be changed.

I think it's more about maintaining a certain standard.

That particular one bugs me as well. It is a pity there is no plural for "You"
"ye" is getting a bit dated.

There is no standard. There is nothing inherently wrong with most of the examples given in the thread.

'Obliged' seems to be out the window. 'Obligated' now, for some reason.
