That's all a bit of tenuous projecting tbh. Fair play if you can see that.

He looks physically like a British soldier though, of that there is nothing tenuous.

    Of course he does.

    I'm really not.

I'm coming from a place of recognising the thing for what it is.

You can tell me it represents something universal, but as a piece of work it is actually very identifiable with one side.

What side exactly are you on about? The one that was against the Nazis?

Physically he looks like a British soldier? Like how? He's tall? WTAF?

    No, dear.

The Nazi's were in the Second World War.

Eh? I thought it was WW1 it represents no? A likeness of a Frenchman, German, Austro-Hungarian or a Turk would have been equally acceptable if people are against the horrors of that war unequivocally.

Could be the same guy! :) FFS, do you know what you are talking about at all?

What about a LIBRARY to remember them by ?

That would be a pilgrimage some on here could do with making.

    :P

So sad that some would desecrate this.

I will say no more because it plays into the you know who's hands.

They haven't gone away you know, but they also seem to have no empathy, no understanding of social or other history at the time, and will always denigrate WW1 from an Irish perspective.

    So sad and so destructive.

I think that's the key point to take away from this episode. They talk about moving forward, respecting other traditions but it's all one way traffic and it's all talk. They really are a horrible stain on the decent people, the majority, in Ireland. I look forward to reading the statements of condemnation from the city mayor and even Michael D, the man who wants to make Ireland truly inclusive.

You are a supporter of Unionism Berserker and a defender of British army actions here on this island.
Do Irish people who want to respect and remember know this.
I would say, how dare you look down your nose at anyone tbh.

He does doesn't he , though American soldiers were dressed almost identically and armed with similar lee Enfield.
He could be displayed in the US later.

An American soldier who like the foolish Irish soldiers was an ally of the British???

    Yeh..could be.

If we are serious about commemorating those that died in the first world war there are better, certainly less contentious, ways of doing so.
It would be very easy to design something which has no military conotations and therefore would not cause offence to anyone. White Dove, A mother grieving over dead son,A child planting a flower.
Simple message,in memory of all those who died, humanity must never allow this to happen again...etc etc etc.
Why Not..war is the failure of civilisation.
    ...
Which begs the question ...is the purpose of these monuments to really remember and pay homage to the MILLIONS of mainly poor working class lads who were sent to their deaths by a ruling class that cared not a whit about them....or is it to perpetuate the old myth...Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori

The working classes had a higher survival rate than "their betters"

We could build the garden of remembrance at Islandbridge or maybe near Parnell Square.

It's to try show how neat, and clean and civilized (and well advised) we are by rehabilitating the British Empire on this Island

    So whats your point

Maybe it's to show that there is a place of remembrance already, at Islandbridge, Built in the 1930's

The participation of many MEN in Ireland (which was Britain at the time, but no matter...), Was an economic decision. Go and get paid, or stay and be destitute.

Neither option was perfect, but hey. Who knows what the right decision is/was. Hindsight is great Foresight and all that.

It was a different time to now. But some will never let the past go. EVER.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,439 ✭✭✭corner of hells

    AND ???

I like your style , we could go for two Garden of Remembrances .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 576 ✭✭✭mick malones mauser

    No
We could go for something non contentious
    No militarism..
My own preference would be for gigantic murals all over the City with the names of all Generals and Politcians responsible for the slaughter with the words,These monsters sent millions of young men and boys to their deaths.. Never Again !!!

    Really? I seriously doubt that.

Newly commissioned officers, usually from the upper classes, were the first up the ladder. Their survival rate was pretty minimal.
