Usually self-employed pay Class S PRSI paid at 4% or €500 - whichever is the greater. If you earn less than €5,000 from self-employment in a year you are exempt from paying Class S PRSI *but* you may pay €500 as a voluntary contributor. What is the process to pay those voluntary contributions? Welfare.ie told me that unlike PAYE voluntary contributions those are calculated and collected by Revenue which is where it gets confusing. Is this part of the tax return form 12?

To become a voluntary contributor, you must complete application form VC1 and return it to the Voluntary Contributions Section, Department of Social Protection, Cork Road, Waterford. LoCall 1890 690 690
