Similar to the TV Special Thread, 3 nominations, pick wisely as only the top noms will make the poll for next week.

    So what's your favourite?

Is it a bit of Mariah, WHAM, Shakin' Stevens, Wizzard, The Pogues?

    Vote and let us know.

    :)

    1. Shaking Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone
    2. Wham - Last Christmas

    and finally the greatest Christmas song ever written and completely under-rated;

    3. Geraldine McQueen - Once Upon A Christmas Song.

Bing Crosby & David Bowie: Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth

Hands down, best Christmas song ever!

    Can't beat Fairytale.

I always do my best to avoid hearing it until at least into December. That opening piano riff just launches me into Xmas.

Probably because it was released around the same time that I was just old enough to really, really appreciate Xmas as a child. So it brings me right back to it.

White Christmas is also a great classic

Rockin' around the Xmas tree also has the nostalgic pang for me, the Mel Smith cover anyway.

Having a mare here, I hate apple, I have tried to download now that's what I call Christmas and Xmas (2013, bought in 2013) and songs are missing as their license agreement with apple has ended. May they burn in hell.

    Anyway mines the Waitresses

Same as CheerLouth... Bing Crosby and David Bowie Little Drummer Boy. Oh I love it so much. I've been waiting to nominate it. It would also be my pick for the first song played on Christmas fm.

Still haven't decided on my other two noms yet. Hmm...

So so many to choose from....

    2 definites are
    Fairytale of NY, The Pogues
    &
Do they know its Christmas, Band Aid (The original, none of the newer versions!!)

After that I'd have 'On the 24th' by The Twang but no one else here will know it so no chance of going into the poll, so will instead go for 'Its the most wonderful time of the year' by Andy Wiliams as my third nomination.

Have to go with “Fairytale of NewYork” having been an emigrant for a while and having lots of relatives who emigrated...this song gets me everytime!

“Driving home for Christmas” has been my favorite since I was an 18 year old. Fond memories of listening to this coming on the radio whilst driving through The Welsh mountains en route to Holyhead from London, heading home for Christmas.

and for a bit of craic you can’t beat old Shakey

“ Merry Christmas Everyone” - Shakin Stevens

    - Dean Martin - Let it Snow!
    - Westlife - Home

All the more poignant since Mel's untimely death. :(

    1. Fairytale of New York - The Pogues feat. Kirsty McColl

I love fairytale. It’s always going to be the ultimate Christmas song.

    2. The darkness - Christmas time.

    3. The wombats - is this Christmas.

Probably a lot to do with my taste in rock music.

Have picked two , can't decide on a third yet :o

One religious , as I just think it's a beautiful Christmas hymn , and one not .

Oh Holy Night - John Berry .

Driving Home For Christmas -Chris Rea .

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,641 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Jona Lewie- Stop the Cavalry is my all time favourite. :D

I also have a soft spot for Sir Cliff's Saviour's Day.

Fairytale of New York gets my third vote- like the Coca Cola ad, when I first hear it, it's really Christmas.

    1) Mary did you know. Aled Jones, Pentatonix also do a good version of it
    1) Last Christmas - Wham
    3) White Christmas - Bing

    Fierce mix there I know....

Ok I just don't have a third favourite. I like most Christmas songs. So I'm going to nominate 'A Spaceman came Travelling.'

I had never heard that song until I was about 13 and a friend of mine stood up and sang it for the class. I was blown away by how beautiful her voice was. I never knew she could sing. I loved the tune of the song too and the la la la bit.

So nice memory, nice song.. there's my third nom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

This was really really tough. My first two were easy but a lot of thinking was required to narrow down the other million songs to just one.

This Christmas by Funzo - not sure why I like this one so much!

All I Want For Christmas Is You - guaranteed to put a smile on my face and make me feel instantly Christmassy.

Driving Home For Christmas - there are few things like the feeling of hearing this on the way to visit my family, or even on the way home from work on the last day of Christmas.

Interesting that the Bowie/Bing version of Little Drummer Boy is so popular. I found out the other day that Bowie didn't like Little Drummer Boy so they had to write his part especially for him because he refused to sing the song.

    1. All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey - my favourite!
    2. Christmas by Olivia Holt - so catchy
    3. Fairytale of New York

Honourable mention goes to "My Only Wish This Year" by Britney Spears. Pure cheese, I love it!

    1. Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
    2. Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade
    3. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey

I also have a soft spot for Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelgerg

Oh I forgot about Mary did you know - its a good song. I'm totally going to you tube it now.
Interesting that the Bowie/Bing version of Little Drummer Boy is so popular. I found out the other day that Bowie didn't like Little Drummer Boy so they had to write his part especially for him because he refused to sing the song.

That is mad - I always just assumed they planned the two songs, they go so well together.

    Top three are probably -

Stop the cavalry - I absolutely adore it.
Fairytale of New York - amazing.
Christmas time (don't let the bells end) - unreal tune.

Special mention for Proper Crimbo (Bo Selecta) too, it's great craic!

    Best:
    1. Mariah - All I want for Christmas
    2. Boney M - Mary's Boy child
    3. Elmo and Patsy - Grandma Got run over by a reindeer

    Worst:

I'd never heard it until a couple of years ago. Has to be the most depressing tune of all the Christmas ones.

    Best:
    1. Mariah - All I want for Christmas

    Worst: The Christmas Shoes

I'd never heard it until a couple of years ago. Has to be the most depressing tune of all the Christmas ones.

....and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is a happy time for granny?

    :D

That song drives me batty... that and the Hippo for Christmas one. Whoever thought them up had a bit too much Christmas grog - they do be grating on the auld nerves.

Depressing is right. Even worse than Honey by Bobby Goldsboro.

I don't know if it's possible to choose just 3, I love so many Christmas songs.

Frankly, I'm astounded this hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread:

    Loughc wrote: »

    3. Geraldine McQueen - Once Upon A Christmas Song.

    +1000, I LOVE this song.

    Also, this:

So I think my top 3 would go:

    Christmas Countdown - Frank Kelly
Lonely Pup in A Christmas Shop - Adam Faith
Once Upon A Christmas Song - Geraldine McQueen

    Honourable mentions to:

Step Into Christmas - Elton John
In Dulce Jubilo - Mike Oldfield
Stop The Cavalry - Jona Lewie
Don't Let The Bells End - The Darkness
    Merry Christmas Everyone - Slade

    Worst Songs:
The Jesus Shoes one - good Christ, a more depressing song I can't think of.
Mariah Carey - I can't stand the wagon, she really grinds my gears. All I want for Christmas is for her to piss off :pac:

Where do people stand on Stay Another Day by East 17? I know it’s not technically a Christmas song but it’s one of those perennially on the Christmas playlists.

My husband goes mad when it comes on the Christmas music channels!! He's adamant it's not a Christmas song. I personally think it's an honorary one :)

Christmas song for me, I was a kid when it was out so I just remember that there were bells at the end of it so it was Christmassy for me.

Where do people stand on Stay Another Day by East 17? I know it’s not technically a Christmas song but it’s one of those perennially on the Christmas playlists.

It was in the charts at Christmas, has bells & sounds more christmassy than most, that'll do me!!:D

Gas thing is, Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie is an anti war song & not a christmas one, that one line though projected it into the christmas orbit though & that was that...instant crimbo classic, So if thats a crimbo song so is stay another day IMO:)

I really struggled to limit my nominations to 3 & felt I'd done myself a disservice by not mentioning the others that 'nearly' made it...

    'Last Christmas' Wham
'Christmas time (dont let the bells end)' The Darkness
'The Christmas song' Nat King Cole
'I believe in father christmas' Greg Lake
'Little drummer boy, peace on earth' David Bowie & Bing Crosby

In fact can see a christmas playlist on Spotify being the order of the day now...

Wow this was much harder to narrow down to 3 than I thought. There are some many I love but I think these make it feel most christmassy for me:)

    Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade
The Christmas song' Nat King Cole
