    Which car?

    The Lexus.

Having seen this now I wish I thought to do similar. My golf I sold for €1350 here is worth about €5k over there plus the vrt rebate it might have made sense.

There wont be any VRT rebate on an eleven year old car.

And would you realistically be able to convert to LHD for 1000 euro?
Buying a dash, pedal box, drivers seat, and possibly the most of the loom behind the dash plus changing the servo and making new brake lines etc etc etc....

    Not to mention labour costs

    Transport to Germany

    Advertising costs

    Etc

For a measly grand profit if you’re lucky

It being an import with a steering conversion would presumably knock a chunk off the value too.

    The Lexus.

    Fuel consumption (town): 22 MPG
    Fuel consumption (country): 36 MPG
    Fuel consumption (combined): 29 MPG

looks ok on paper for a car that size, with a 6 cylinder petrol engine.

    pro
Very well built. Top quality interior. Lexus dealers are best in the business. Impressive refinement. All engines chain cam. IS250 probably the most reliable car you can buy.
    con
Poor change of manual gearbox is not suited to V6 petrol engine. IS250 thirsty. Ride and handling lag behind C-Class, 3 Series and A4. Rear seats don't fold.

From what I read here some people with IS200 were getting as little as 14mpg. other 34mpg.

    is200 is a 4 cylinder 2.0 I believe whereas is250 is the V6.

Love my auto is250 tax is nasty but car only cost me 2.5k and insurance is reasonable.

Is200 is 6cyl. The alteeza Japanese imports are 4cyl.

Looking at the IS250 at the moment, would you recommend?

I bought last May after selling a more expensive car to have extra cash for some jobs at home. €2700 for a 2006 205k kms and reams of main dealer service history.

Alternator & starter had to be replaced in the first month [FML what can you do]

No other issues. averaging 10.5l/100km but I'm only doing 300km a week max usually closer to 250km depending on the week. I managed to coax it to 7.0l/100km on a round trip from Cork to Tralee over the summer.

Insurance stayed the same coming from a 2.0 Diesel Hybrid. Tax is the only pain I suppose given the last car was €190 but that car cost me €17k

It's a lot of fun to drive in "s" mode with the paddles. Took a while to get used to the max gear selection as other autos I've driven were more semi-auto or automated manuals.

    So yeah, I would recommend.

Edit - I haven't driven the manual but read a few reviews and there were some posts here to to avoid as it's meant to be dreadful.

A lot of Altezzas are 6 cylinder too. The 4 cylinder isn’t the standard engine on them.

If you’re going IS250 - I’d go auto. It just suits them better.

I think the 4 cylinder might be standard on the ones sold in Japan.

Definitely be going for the auto. Think it suits the character of the car far more

Picked up a 05 avensis for my dad this evening.
2.0 diesel (d4d), 87k miles on it, 12 months test, 6 months tax, 2 new tyres and full service history
    €1100.

    Driving for peanuts...

As before, the base engine is the same 6 cylinder we got here. That’s the alltezza AS200. The RS200 has the 4 cylinder and has about 50 extra bhp.

That’s weirdly clean for a Beetle. Not even a kerb mark on that alloy!

What are those FR-V's like? I like the idea of a roomy petrol Honda for less than €1,500.

That Octavia is seriously cheap. Gotta be a scam of some sort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,546 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The FRVs are good. The newer 1.8 is more economical, but overall they’re a very good car. Not sure if the 1.7 has a belt or chain.

The mank of the FRV interior.

With a Bangernomics you can budget for an interior valet, it wouldn't make much difference to the price.

Looks like mold all over the inside of that FRV, even the boot plastics are covered in it.

Will be putting my 03' Corolla, 1.4 petrol VVTI up for sale soon in a bid to upgrade a few years.

NCT until March and will tax it for three months to keep me motoring for now, has 133k miles on the clock. Very clean inside and recently fully serviced. Any ideas on what to price it as?

And was looking at something like a 1.6 diesel from '08 onwards in the bangernomics (to slightly above bangernomics!) range to move up to.
Or if anyone has any ideas, I'm open to suggestions.

i30 or Ceed but very hard to get for €2k

Clean 07 e12 1.4d4d corolla with the bearings done in the gearbox is what you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,546 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Massive tax though :)

They are a bit smaller than the Corolla your in at the moment but something diesel and decent with cheap tax for around 2k is a hard find.

Thanks for the above suggestions and honestly I don't mind going up as far as a 2L if the car is right.

How are the KIA's in terms of cost of repairs, are they hard to work on?

Kia Rio,One of the simplest most reliable cars on the road , think of them as a 90's Corolla.
