Great result for Casey , better than he could of hoped for. This is the F-U that the government needs, it's such a shame there is no genuine above board strong alternative party to vote for as FF and FG would take a hammering if a real contender arose.

The Shinners have spent the last ten years backing the likes of travellers and social welfare recipients never dreaming that the country would get back off its knees and be full of workers.

They backed the wrong horse. Few people realise that their vote went down from the European election to the general election and has peaked. There is a gap in the market that FF and FG are not filling, but SF have missed their opportunity to fill it.

Casey is probably far more than that. I am sure there are many who didn't admit they voted for Casey in the exit poll for fear of being constantly questioned about their choice.

I am delighted that you have set 20% or so as a mark of failure. Any party that doesn't get 20% or more in the next general election is a failure by your measure. Have bookmarked these posts to remind you of this.

If anything comes from this election it should be how we vote for president.
Clearly a certain percentage of the electorate don't even understand the role of the president.
Maybe it should be taken out of the people hands.
I for one, don't ever want a Trump type president representing my country.

I think it's a massive statement that speaks volumes about the political landscape and sentiment.

He was expected to get 2% before he spoke out.

Scandal ensued and he was told to back out.

Instead, he got 10 times more votes.

It wouldn't be that X% of voters got reeled by some media guy who played the electorate on their fears that were, at most, localised, and not at all to do with the Presidency issues at hand, and everything to do with their past electoral decisions??????

Oh, I know, but apart from Labour in 1922, I don't know of any political party that has polled as high as that. The Shinners must be very disappointed for example.

It's a massive massive message.
He wouldn't have made a good president but I'm so glad he sent a very clear message and it's now been delivered. From last on 1 percent to second on 21 percent. I couldn't have asked or expected more. I'm thrilled. I'll have a few pints tonight.

I think it’s probably a fairly accurate reflection in fairness. Most people I know who voted for Casey were happy to tell you they voted for him.

Blanch, he isn't a 'party'. He put a SINGLE spurious opinion of travellers to the public and 20% of a 46-50% turnout bought it.

Remember Leo Varadkar took the unusual step of asking us not to vote for Peter Casey.
All the other candidates turned on him.
Irish media took the gloves off.
No polls were released after Casey opened the can of worms which would have made great headlines.

And lets be honest, Casey was no polished performer.

We have re elected a millionaire socialist who had to rely on the State broadcaster to get elected first time out.

Ordinarily this would be an innocuous result, but in these circumstances Casey on 20% is a massive slap in the face to the Irish Establishment, Political and Media!

Fair fùcks to Casey, he did extremely well.

It's just kind of sad that people have continuously voted in a communist dictator loving sponger who lies about his expenses and who has never worked a real job in his life, who had the support of a whole media/political/leftist establishment, as a representative of Ireland and Irish people.

Miggeldy's reputation has been tarnished though, and the media has taken a hit from this though, which is all good to have.

The only way things decline into hate and selfishness is with people like Francie. Intolerant of other opinions and when things aren't going to the narrative uses labels to shut down conversation.
