Why are we voting 1,2,3 for candidates. Is this not first past the post as it is one position only ?

Anyway. Bottled it and voted Mickey D and yes

Brian Lenihan would have been elected president in 1990 on first preferences (all other things being equal)

People might have voted differently if it was FPTP

Maybe if he published his expenses pre election might have helped. People are fed up being taken for granted . At least casey had the balls to say what he thought not like Mickey d who spent 39 mins of Tuesday debate without saying one word . And the fact that he thinks he epitaph should be he gave his life for the Irish people ... lol . Ya forgot the 300 k plus a year part Mickey . He will get re-elected but there are a lot of people finally beginning to see through this chancer that’s running again even though he was only running once !

A poll during the election showed not even half of SF voters would vote for their candidate. Many of them supported Gemma O'Doherty. Their candidate is poor.

    Just on that.

If he was elected, what would have happened in 1995 following his passing? A Presidential by-election or an outright new election?

Childers died in office. He was replaced by O Dalaigh, who resigned a couple of years later. I think O Dalaigh was elected normally, and could have served a full 7 years, but perhaps someone else knows better.

You need to start posting from a few of your other accounts, mix it up a bit.

you would think that FG voters would vote Casey, at least he said how workers were shafted this budget. That lying snake varadkar said he would reward work, that went out the window pretty quick. They have to have someone to vote for!

    Wouldn't ride her into battle.
But that's not the issue at hand. The issue with her is her abject stupidity or blatant denial (I'm not sure which it was) vis a vis her comments on the avg industrial wage.

Was canvassed by her a week or so ago. There was some serious photoshopping done for that poster pic.

There was no election as such for O Dalaigh. He was the only candidate nominated.

The constitution says a new election should be held within 60 days.

The biggest problem I had with the current president is that if he had his way we would not have fair elections in this country, people seem to forget who his Hero's are, Castro, Ortega and Chavez.

Only idiots would be "deeply saddened" when Castro died.

    From Human Rights Watch:
    https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/11/26/cuba-fidel-castros-record-repression
Many of the abusive tactics developed during his time in power – including surveillance, beatings, arbitrary detention, and public acts of repudiation – are still used by the Cuban government.

But our idiot in the Aras was "deeply saddened".

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/27/fidel-castro-dictator-legacy-abuses
More than a million Cubans took to leaky boats and risked drowning to flee poverty, stagnation and a sense of claustrophobia which most blamed on Castro, not the US embargo.

Our president is all talk but he has been an embarrassment with his friendship and kind words to people like Castro, Chavez, Ortega.
His comrade Ortega runs a police state and kills the people he rules.
But Michael D has lovely dogs, keep the (bad) poet, flowers and rose petals, ignore the truth that our president needs replacing.
Sure shouldn't we all be "deeply saddened" when a dictator dies, if Michael D supports them they must be ok, because our president comes as tea cosy.
A vote for Michael D is a show one doesn't care other people live under brutal dictators and one is happy for Ireland to continue to have a deluded president who is deeply saddened when one dies.

So the jet is the least of Michael D's problems.
