How does he keep getting work?

It’s the same ducking roles in most movies. down on his luck rocker who learns the meaning of [insert here] and leaves behind his slacker lifestyle.

Keeps getting work because he's clearly a draw. Everything he is in does well. Doesn't really take a genius to figure it out.

Shallow Hal is one of the greatest movies ever.

I think it's because he pretty much created a casting cliche all by himself.

A casting note for a 'Jack Black'.

An egotistical, self absorbed rocker/stoner/ne'er do well type who doesn't have movie star looks but appeals due to his charismatic passion and strong moral compass.

    Big Budget movie.

Casting Director: "Get me Jack Black for this role"
    Agency: "We're sorry, he's unavailable.."
Casting Director: "Ok, get me a 'Jack Black' for this role"
Agency: "How does Seth Rogan sound?"
    Casting Director: "Beee-u-tiful...."

    Alternatively, a low budget movie.

Casting Director: "Get me Jack Black for this role"
Agency: "Sure, he's available..it will be $5 million"
Casting Director: "No, that's too much, get me a 'Jack Black' for $50k"

Because it is 100% guaranteed he will make this face at some point in the film:

And he did write and perform the greatest song in the world.

    And then wrote a tribute.

Jack Black is great. Yes, he does play the same character in every movie, but so do many other comedy actors. Will Ferrell, Seth Rogan, Jason Bateman, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, Ed Helms....the list goes on. Adam Sandler for God's sake has made a 20-year career out playing himself in movies.

Arguably even the likes of Chris Pratt play the same character in every movie.

If you have a think about it, very few actors actually stray from their niche through their career.

Hes quite likeable and entertaining, he does play the same role in everything but so do lots of big actors..patrick bateman has never not been a depressed middle aged dad with kids and a dark comedic streak

I wouldn’t be over gone on him overall as a performer, but he’s quite good in the current clock/house/wall Halloween flick.

I like his music a lot more then his acting. I have a lot of time for Tenacious D. But yeah, I wouldn't be that big on his movies. Although I liked that HBO series he did with Kyle Gass way back years ago.

You're obviously not familiar with his earlier work in mergers and acquisitions.

He keeps getting work precisely because producers know exactly what they are going to get. And he was really funny in the Jumanji remake.

Never once found him funny. Saw him on the Eric Andre show and he was completely out of his depth trying to make his bad jokes with that annoying eyebrow thing he does.
Also Tenacious D was the worst thing ever. I wouldn't usually mind a band existing, but that goddamn tribute song was just being played too much at one point.
Then his movies are just him. Playing him. Waster, stoner, heart of gold, just needs the right motivation to change his life for the better.
I'm sure he's obviously nice but he just strikes me as the guy who makes not funny jokes in the voice of a 19th century lord type stroking his beard, because obviously that makes it more funny. While no one laughs or a muted quick laugh comes out just to save the awkwardness of it all.

I find him very hit & miss. I loved Shallow Hal & School of rock but anything else just felt very meh about

Alot of actors don't stray far from usual types.
George Clooney repeatedly turned down "villain" roles, the guy loves himself so probably can't help but want people to love him as much as he does himself.

Tom Cruise was about the only one who went against the trend in Collateral but that was ages ago.

Black just does what he's good at and if he's getting paid then happy days, easy life for him!

didnt he do some christmas rom com and some action films (godzilla or king kong or somethin?) . Stepped away from the school of rock vibe in those films maybe.

he was very good in high fidelity but that was nearly 20 years ago.

Just like Johnny Depp. The same character in every film. I avoid anything he's in.

    Really???

How are Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, Raoul Duke, Dean Corso and Fred Abberline in any way comparable

I thought he did a good job playing a teenage girl in jumanji. Also, the goosebumps films and the other Halloween movie he's in are nothing like the roles described in the op. Maybe he was typecast in the early 00s but he seems to have moved on now
