40 WBS builts schools - what a mess!

I didn't see a thread on the 40 WBS built school yet.

Jeez, it's some mess. Wondering how it'll pan out for staff and students. Will be a lot harder to find temporary accommodation for Secondary Schools, and be carnage with teachers potentially moving between different sites a few times a day.

No teachers I know are affected yet.

Wasn't it a clever idea that the Dept of Education would allow a contractor to 'self certify'. What a great little country!
The fire safety problem was known for quite a while before it hit the media.
All of these schools had been checked last year because of faults re. fire safety and this latest trouble was found during that process.
Yet these guys continued to get contracts.
This problem was created by the Dept. trying to avoid responsibility or taking contractors to task for the final build.

Did I hear right on the radio yesterday that it was dept policy NOTto inform schools fully of the defects and it was only as the tenders came to light that the media light was shone on it? If so Richard Bruton has some very serious questions to answer to imo as it would have occured under his watch

Self certification is common in many fields. Sure everything with a CE mark is self certified.

Absolute shame not to inform schools or perform a thorough analysis of all buildings once issues were found by one.

A number of the principals had notified the DES about issues and were fobbed off with muttering about a minor works grant . Chickens home to roost . Bruton must be laughing .
