"maybe in 7 years time we'll have 3 candidates from Ireland's fittest family" :D:D:D:D:D:D

    Odds on Paddy Power:

    Michael D Higgins 1/50
    Sean Gallagher 25/1
    Peter Casey 33/1
    Liadh Ni Riada 40/1
    Joan Freeman 150/1
    Gavin Duffy 200/1

Casey was 500/1 last week at abject last position.

His rise is based on pretty much one single issue. It is a good barometer of how the general public feels about this issue in question.

Is it ethical for the government to take up to 47% of your salary as Tax?
Is it ethical for them to take 33% on capital gains tax if you sell a property or inheritance tax - which of course you've paid tax on when you bought the property, and the LPT etc.

To be that is daylight robbery.

So if individuals find loopholes then I have no problem with them using it. Given the amount of money civil servants are paid and consultant firms, there shouldn't be any loopholes out there for people to take advantage of.

Everyone would use a loophole to pay less tax, if they knew about it.

So should Margaret Cash not be lauded then for finding her loopholes by that logic?

All well good if you're willing to pay fully for your kids education, if you have any, and are happy for mandatory health care and pensions, you can't be expecting the state to worry about any of that.

Answer me this - what has what tax you pay got to do with being the President?

Are you contributing to Ireland basically

Desparately poor candidates bar MDH and LNiR when she bothers.

I remember 1990. Brian Lenihan Snr, Mary Robinson and the weakest candidate Austin Currie.

    My view so far..

    - the two ladies are desperately trying to seem relevant and failing

    - MDH has problems with being questioned

    - Gallagher and Duffy are spoofers

    - Casey is unrehearsed and unpolished... But he's defending himself well against constant attacks (from the other candidates and the host) and not getting dragged into the squabbling, and all the better for it

Typical RTE bias in their interviews and debates. Let the Government/president slide through interviews without asking the hard questions but try to blacken/discredit any form of opposition parties/individuals particularly sf.

Actually how about a joint presidency next time, Podge and Rodge.

Oh, I know. It's not even a democratic organisation. The plebs are told what way to vote and they peddle that out as democracy. Plenty of examples out there in the media of what happens when they dare to disagree.

It just occurred to me each of these ads have someone more impressive than at least one of the 6 candidates in the debate and one of the ads just features two orangutans scratching themselves.

So she takes home less than Margaret Cash.

Ya but I bet she doesn't shop in Penneys.

NiRiada said she want to be the voice of the marginalised. Please don't let her be the VOICE of anything. Very close to Mrs. Doyle's falsetto.

No, a dig at anyone that has business outside of Ireland

I earn a net salary of $60k, I have a house in Dublin, one in the Gaeltacht and an apartment in Brussels, all to heat and run, 3 housemaids, and a family of 5 to feed and I'm telling you, you ought to try it sometime.

How much are civil servants paid? Not a whole pile.

Depends which ones you are talking about, the ones advising the government are getting well paid.

It's obv i'm not talking about teachers, nurses etc.

OK did I miss it but was the question about tax asked to MDH? Or was that an opportune ad break?

Used to chat to a lady on the train to Cork when I lived down there. She always told me I'd make a great politician. I took it as a compliment for ages. I'm beginning to question that as each election passes.
